We’ve been taught that breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it gives us the energy to kickstart the day, especially after a 7 or 8 hour fasting period. However, as a working adult, breakfast can become something that’s hard to keep up with, especially when you’re rushing to get to the office on time. As such, we often turn to ready-made convenient breakfasts that may not necessarily be nutritious.

Nonetheless, is it really that difficult to eat healthily right from the start of the day? Besides the smoothie as suggested by one of our health coaches previously, we have a few more ideas on quick and tasty breakfasts that you can prepare easily the night before or a few minutes before leaving the house. Don’t worry, our list of breakfast ideas contains both sweet and savoury dishes that we’re sure will appeal to everyone.

1.Sweet Potato and Black Bean Avocado Breakfast Burrito

For those who like a little spice or just like burritos in general (who doesn’t?) this recipe aims to add a healthier layer to it and it doesn’t require anything complicated. The recipe relies on a whole wheat tortilla as a base, using sweet potato and fried black beans to give it an added taste. It also contains egg white and avocado for a creamier texture.

It also comes with a little spice thanks to the added cumin and chilli powder that goes into the recipe, but this can be added as you see fit. You can also make it the night before and reheat it in the morning without any problem; in fact it might even taste better if you do it this way.

The egg white gives you protein, avocado the essential vitamins and oils while sweet potato and black beans are known to be low GI, meaning that it will release the sugars slowly and thus, you will feel full for at least 4 hours without any sugar rollercoaster.

2.Chocolate Peanut Butter Granola Apple Bites

These little apple bites are simple to make, can be eaten on the go and are highly nutritious and tasty to boot. You just need an apple (any kind of apple you like), some peanut butter, granola and if you want maybe even put in some chocolate chips although it’s probably a lot easier with chocolate sauce (but go easy on this). All you have to really do is slice the apples properly then add in the other ingredients on top of them and voila, you have a quick breakfast that you can make in no time at all. Not just that, the apples will give you a good fibre intake and boost your immune system.

Those with peanut allergies can substitute it with either almond or black sesame butters or you can even just try with these alternate nut butters.

3.Whole-Grain Blueberry Muffins

Muffins are great but Blueberry Muffins are perfect to start the day off right, and what better than making your own whole-grain muffins at home on a weekend and eating them for breakfast on a weekday. If you have children, this would be a delightful treat for them too as it’s wholesome and contains both fibre and antioxidants. Nonetheless, this shouldn’t be your daily staple as it is higher in sugar compared to our other dishes on this list.

4.Healthy Berry Yoghurt Smoothie

This smoothie only requires five ingredients and offers a great intake of proteins and energy that will carry you throughout the day. It can also be used as a snack to keep you satisfied in between meals thanks to its perfect blend of bananas and blue and blackberries that go well with the added measure of Greek Yoghurt. All you need to do is grab the necessary ingredients (you can use natural or frozen berries if you’d like) and put them all in a blender for some tasty, smoothie fun.

5.Paleo Glory Muffins

These “Glory Muffins” are packed with raisins and all kinds of fibres, using sweet potatoes as a base instead of flour, they also make use of other ingredients like shredded coconut, walnuts, honey and even carrots to give it an extra kick in taste and nutrition. With all of that added in there we really can’t recommend a better way to start the day off, they’re especially good after a workout as they’ll help you recover faster.

6.Sun Butter Toast

While the original recipe for this uses sun butter, which works better for anyone that has nut allergies, you can add in other types of nut butters or other substitutes to it. The recipe itself is really simple but that’s an added bonus, it is quick to make and the added potassium from the banana plus the sweetness from the nut butter and crunchiness of the toast makes it fun and tasty to eat. Top it off with some roasted sesame seeds to give it a nuttier flavour and crunch.

While you can eat it on its own, the nut butter might be a bit dry so we recommend eating it along with milk or some kind of tea based drink. Apple Rose tea for one is a good tea as it helps expand on the fruity feeling that the banana gives off plus it’s a good way to start the day off in a more relaxed state.

7.Peanut Butter, Strawberry and Banana Quesadillas

Burritos aren’t the only Mexican dish that people love. Quesadillas are right up there and the fact that they’re so easy to modify (like sandwiches) make them a go-to for any quick meals. Usually they are made with saltier or heavier ingredients like different meats, vegetables and cheese, but this particular type of quesadillas instead choose to go on a sweeter route.

The bananas and peanut butter act as a substitute for the recipe used above, but the added strawberries blend well with the peanut butter and help give it this PB&J taste. There’s also an added bonus if you toast or grill the quesadilla slightly while you put the cut up banana and strawberry pieces on it as well and you can even replace the peanut butter with other jams or spreads such as Nutella!

8.Egg Muffins

This recipe is another quick and painless recipe to add to the list. While it’s still a muffin, this one uses eggs as the base for the muffins, combined with vegetables such as carrots and bell pepper, you can make a lot of these, enough to even last you a week. Plus we reckon that this is also a good way to sneak in vegetables into your children’s diet if they love muffins!

9.Chlorophyll Green Juice

Chlorophyll is a natural, fat-soluble molecule found in plants that gives plant their green color. Its name derives from the Greek world Chloro (meaning Green) and Phyll (meaning leaf) and it stands as a good way to increase red blood cells as well as energy and well-being and it also helps with cleaning the bowels, among other great benefits. It’s also good for recipes such as this.

Juices are the best way to make use of Chlorophyll and this one is no exception. Simply grab the required ingredients and put them into a blender for a quick juice that you can consume in the mornings, it’ll help you start your day right and literally wake up every cell in your body.

You can find Chlorophyll at some stores or you can use something like Chlorophyll Powder in order to make this recipe.

10.Skinny Chocolate Peanut Butter and Banana Shake

This thick milkshake made with a base of thick Greek Yoghurt and chocolate is sure to entertain your sweet tooth, because who said breakfast can’t also be the sweetest meal? Simply grab your blender throw in some frozen bananas, cocoa, peanut butter, honey and Greek Yoghurt and get down to making this sweet and chocolatey shake to start your day off like a champ.

With that, we hope that these recipes help you out in solving any breakfast problems. While some of this still require you to set some time aside all of the recipes are stuff that you can do quick once you have all the necessary ingredients, plus they work great when reheated and can be eaten multiple times. So without further ado, get down to cooking or blending!
