Losing weight and staying healthy can be a tough thing for a lot of people, whether it’d be exercising, dieting or just trying not to eat, it’s something that can be tough on a lot of people. Because of this we also have a warped view about health, associating weight loss with good health, physical and mental happens a lot but it’s not necessarily a good thing, and they’re not the same thing.
That was the point that famous body positive instagrammer, Michelle Elman, aimed to show with her recent after-after picture. Using the before-after format that’s used to compare people’s appearances before and after they diet, she wanted to showcase how, even when you’ve lost weight you can still be in an unhealthy state – especially mentally.
If you look at both pictures it’s easy to get confused as to which came first and after, but Elman herself gives a good explanation as to why trying to figure out a person’s weight or health based only on a picture is wrong.
The methods for which someone can lose weight are varied, and the more radical ones, the one that people say give you quick results, can end up leaving people in an unhealthier state than anything else.
So remember, before becoming proud and happy about someone (or yourself) losing a lot of weight, you should first wonder about what methods they went through to lose it and if they truly feel healthy. Cause at the end of the day, it comes down to whether you are happy with yourself. That, my dear friends, is what body positivity and confidence is about.
