Amidst his busy schedule, I got a chance to catch up with Jaems who is the founder of The Fashion and Beyond, National Director of Face of Singapore and a freelance photographer, to learn more about his weight loss journey purely through exercise and diet. We discussed what sparked his decision to lose the weight naturally and how mental health played an important part in this ongoing journey as well as how this has helped his body confidence.

Q: Tell me a little about yourself and what made you decide to go on this weight loss journey?
I’m about to turn 36 and I know that my health and well-being is more important now than ever. As a freelance events photographer, mobility, focus and attention to detail are critical to my success. I’ve been through a lot in my career – from market research to merchandising sales, marketing, F&B, events, and talent management. All of these experiences have taken their toll on my health and lifestyle, leading to me weighing in at my heaviest at 110kg. But that was before the pandemic.
The pandemic made me realise that my health was in a dangerous place and I needed to make a change. I took control of my life, both physically and mentally, and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’m stronger and healthier than ever, and I know that I have what it takes to keep pushing forward and becoming the best version of myself.
Q: What goals have you achieved this past year?
It’s a new year and I’m ready to take on new challenges! My goal for this year is to not just maintain, but to improve my body composition by reducing my body fat percentage and building more lean muscle. And I’m off to a great start! I was able to maintain my numbers in January, which is a huge accomplishment. This is just the beginning and I’m motivated to keep pushing myself to new heights. Whether it’s through diet and exercise, or through mental toughness and determination, I know that I have what it takes to reach my goals and become the best version of myself.
Q: Any nutritional recommendations that aids in your workout regime?
I’ve tried just about everything when it comes to nutrition and dieting. I’ve scoured the internet, taken advice from friends, and even listened to experts. But through all of my experimentation, I’ve found that reducing my sugar and carb intake works best for me. This approach has allowed me to maintain a healthy and balanced diet, without feeling restricted or deprived. So if you’re trying to find what works best for you, don’t be afraid to experiment and find what resonates with your body and your lifestyle. You never know, you might just discover the key to your own nutritional success!
Q: How do you manage to alter your eating patterns and accommodate the rest of your family?
I spend a lot of time alone, whether I’m prepping my own meals or eating out. But I’ve made a commitment to myself to eat healthier and I’ve been lucky enough to have the support of my family. I’ve let them know that I need to be mindful of what I eat, and they understand and support me. However, I also like to treat myself and enjoy good food with loved ones. That’s why I allow myself to indulge a little bit, around 20% of my weekly intake, but I always make sure to do so in moderation. By striking this balance, I’m able to maintain a healthy lifestyle while also enjoying the company of my loved ones. It’s all about finding what works for you and sticking to it, and I’m doing just that!
Q: When comes to eating well, what are your top 3 recommendations?
When it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, there are three things I always keep in mind. Firstly, it’s important to control my intake of sugar and carbs. Secondly, portion control is key. I make sure I’m not overeating and only consuming what my body actually needs. And finally, moderation is key. I make sure I’m not overindulging in any one thing, whether it’s food or drink. By keeping these simple principles in mind, I’m able to maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle that makes me feel my best. So let’s take control of our diets, fuel our bodies with the right nutrients, and feel amazing everyday!
Q: What is your favourite form of exercise and why?
I absolutely love long-distance running! There’s nothing like the feeling of accomplishment and pushing beyond my limits. It’s truly empowering and motivates me to keep going. Running has so many benefits for both my physical and mental health. It helps me build endurance, improve my cardiovascular health, and reduce stress. Each time I lace up and hit the pavement, I’m setting new personal bests and pushing myself to be my best. I embrace that feeling of achievement and continue to set new goals for myself. Remember, the only limit is the one I set for myself. So I’ll keep lacing up, hitting the road, and pushing beyond my limits, embracing the thrill of the run and all that it brings!
Q: Kindly share with us your ‘all natural’ workout tips?
You’ve probably heard the phrase “Just do it!” and it couldn’t be more true when it comes to starting a fitness journey. The most important thing is to take that first step and get moving. Whether it’s running, weightlifting, yoga, or any other form of exercise, what matters most is that you find something you enjoy and can stick to consistently. Consistency is key to seeing results and making your fitness journey a sustainable part of your life. So let’s ignore the excuses, embrace the challenge, and “Just do it!” You’ll be amazed at what you’re capable of and how good it feels to take control of your health and well-being.
Q: Embarking on your physical fitness journey, how does mental health play an important part?
It’s true that our minds and bodies are intricately connected, and taking care of both is essential for overall well-being. I know from personal experience that unhealthy habits can have negative consequences on our physical and mental health. But it’s never too late to make positive changes and prioritise our well-being. Before starting a fitness journey, it’s crucial to take care of your mental health and establish a positive, growth-oriented mindset. When you focus on improving both your physical and mental health, you’ll find that progress comes easier and you’ll experience a greater sense of satisfaction and happiness.
Q: What are the important workout tips you have picked up during your time working in the gym?
When it comes to working out, proper form and safety should always be a top priority. Injuries can not only put a halt to your progress, but also cause discomfort and setbacks. That’s why it’s important to ask questions and seek guidance if you’re unsure about something instead of thinking that you can do it all by yourself. A trainer can be incredibly helpful, but if that’s not an option for you, I’m here to support and share my knowledge. Let’s work together to achieve your fitness goals, safely and effectively. Remember, taking the time to do things the right way from the start sets you up for long-term success and progress!
Q: Why do you provide any workout training for friends without expecting any financial returns?
I understand that finances can be a barrier for many people, including myself, but I believe that investing in our health is one of the most valuable investments we can make. I’ve learned so much about taking care of myself, and I want to share that knowledge with others. By becoming the best version of ourselves, we not only improve our own lives, but we also inspire and empower those around us. I am committed to spreading positivity and helping others achieve their health and wellness goals, because when we’re healthy and confident, good things will eventually come for all of us.
Q: What would you say to someone who is struggling with their body image?
It’s important to remember that everyone has different body types and there is no one “perfect” body. Instead of striving for an unrealistic standard, prioritise your health and well-being. Focus on eating nutritious food, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. These habits will not only improve your physical health, but also boost your mental and emotional well-being. Embrace your unique qualities and features, and recognise that true beauty comes from within. You are worthy and deserving of love and acceptance, just the way you are. So let’s work together towards a healthier and happier you!
Q: Any last words for our readers?
Remember that your worth as a person is not defined by your physical appearance. Your body is amazing, capable of so many things, and is unique to you. Focusing on being healthy, both physically and mentally, will not only help improve your body image, but it will also bring you happiness and confidence in who you are. Embrace and celebrate your individuality, and don’t compare yourself to others. You are beautiful, just the way you are!
