What Our Stomachs Are Thinking a BAO

Bao Makers is Singapore’s first family owned and run Bao dining concept pioneer. Inspired by their virgin trip to London’s BAO, the Pang Family spent months experimenting and refining the combination of bun and filling flavours that they felt would be enticing to a discerning local Singaporean palate. Soon after, the Pang family opened their first casual café style concept at Jalan Besar back in October 2015. Ms Pang Su Yi, who heads the general operations of Bao Makers, absolutely loves all types of bao and enthuses that one of her favourite childhood foods has got to be the juicy and flavourful “kung bak pao” (braised pork belly buns).

Since November 2017, Bao Makers is now inconspicuously tucked away in a charming heritage shop house with intricately painted Peranakan tiles on the front entrance that is situated on the tiny Jiak Chun road, which is an offshoot tangent road along the hip and trendy Keong Saik Road. Boasting an extensive Asian fusion menu of Japanese inspired rice bowls, pastas, and salads, the main stars at Bao Makers are of course the affordable range of tasty gourmet baos. The top classic sellers are the Chill Crab Bao, Salted Egg Chicken Bao and Salmon Mentaiko Bao. Priced at between just S$3.80 and S$4.50 each, these baby bite-sized baos may seem small, but they sure are filling.

The selection of delicious baos at Bao Makers changes seasonally. For example, the latest innovation is the Blackened Chicken Bao that comprises a well-seasoned black charcoal fried chicken topped with special house-blended garlic mayonnaise and served in a steamed black sesame bun (S$4.30). Ms Pang’s personal favourite dish is the succulent Beef Steak Teppanyaki (S$16.80) that is pan seared with buttery minced garlic. For those with a sweet tooth, Bao Makers has also created two new sweetened milk-based thirst quenchers; Lychee Rose Milk (S$6.50) and Mango Milk (S$6.50). Dessert lovers will enjoy the warm soft baked Cookie Bomb (S$7.50) sundae that is paired with a scoop of ice-cream.
