It isn’t easy staying fit even if you have a nine to five job and are able to organise your free time. Things tend to get a lot more complicated when you have to travel for work. Even for the most experienced travellers the whole journey can be quite unpredictable and stressful. You are limited with food choices and your regular gym routine goes out of the window.
But don’t worry, not everything is lost here are some great tips on staying fit while travelling for work.
Don’t forget to drink water
Water being the operative word here. Avoid juices and alcohol, you should always have a bottle of water at hand. Whether you are waiting at the airport or en route to a meeting, make sure you always stay hydrated. Spending a lot of time on planes can lead to dehydration due to the decrease of air humidity in the cabin. Most companies make sure you get enough water, but in case you need more, don’t hesitate to ask the flight attendant, they are always willing to get you a bottle or two.
Walk, walk, walk
Travelling for work usually includes a lot of sitting, whether it’s in transport or in meetings, either way you are looking and hours of limited movement. This is why you should try and use every opportunity you have to walk. Whether it’s a couple of hours in between meetings, or in the evening when you can go and explore the city. Instead of opting for organised tours, grab a map and simply start walking. Imagine discovering a city like New York on foot! The ideal option would be to walk early in the morning, just 20 minutes or so, to wake up your body and get your metabolism going. This will get your blood flowing, supply your brain with oxygen and most importantly, help you stay in shape.
Every Hotel has a Fitness Centre – Use It
There is no excuse not to. Try to sneak in a fitness session or two. There are also some strength training exercises that you can easily do in your hotel room. On the other hand if you are not a fan of the gym, a lot of locations offer different activities to help you stay fit. If you find yourself in Australia, opt for comfortable Byron Bay accommodation, where you can choose from a whole array of activities, from yoga to bike rides. Australia is one of those countries which, if you are lucky to visit for work, just makes you want to use every spare moment on some kind of physical activity. So it would be a shame not to.
Make sure you don’t stray too far from your eating habits
Airport and airplane food can really mess with your diet. So be prepared. If you can bring a few healthy snacks so as not to be tempted by all the fast food served at the airport, make sure you do so. Remember, you don’t have to eat everything that is served during a flight, you can definitely skip the snacks and sweets. Business lunches are also a great treat to your regimen, but you can always opt for a salad meal and skip a toast or two. Some airlines, such as Singapore Airlines, allow you to choose your inflight meals prior boarding, which will greatly help you stay away from eating more than you should. The most important thing is to prepare mentally to say no to all the unhealthy temptations during travelling for work.
So as you can see there is no good reason for you not to stay fit while travelling. In addition, physical activity is great for getting rid of stress, and clearing your mind, so by focusing on your fitness you will be able to improve your business skills as well.
