The pursuit of academic excellence has become deeply ingrained in today’s culture, often viewed as the key to a successful future. This pressure, particularly intense in subjects like mathematics, can be overwhelming for children. It often results in stress, anxiety, and a loss of enthusiasm for learning, turning what should be an engaging experience into a daunting challenge. Over time, this can stifle creativity and diminish motivation, leading to a negative association with education.

A recent survey revealed that “In 2023, the private consumption expenditure on education in Singapore amounted to 8.91 billion Singapore dollars.”, more than $1bn in growth since 2020.

While it’s understandable that parents and educators want the best for their children, the current educational approach may be causing more harm than good. However, there is a different way to approach this – one that transforms learning into an enjoyable, engaging, and less stressful experience. Paradigm Mathematics is a program that embraces this philosophy, believing that education should be seen as a journey of discovery and growth, rather than a relentless race for top grades.

Dylan, 28, and founder of Paradigm Mathematics is a finance graduate who found his true calling not in a bank, but in the world of math education. His journey began in 2020, amidst the pandemic’s chaos. What started as a humble effort to help a few students with their math exams through TikTok has now blossomed into a brainchild success. Today, Maths Paradigm proudly supports more than 200 students. Dylan’s story is as inspiring as his teaching methods. At 20, he started tutoring part-time, finding joy in helping students conquer their math fears. By 24, he had turned this passion into a mission.

Transforming Math into an Engaging and Meaningful Experience

Mathematics often carries the stigma of being a dry, rigid subject, focused on precision and abstract concepts. Yet, math is an integral part of everyday life, and the challenge lies in helping students see this connection.

Employs storytelling as a powerful tool to make math more relatable is their core belief. By incorporating narratives into lessons, this approach captures students’ imaginations, making complex concepts more accessible and engaging. Through these stories, students begin to understand the relevance of math in their lives, finding the subject more enjoyable and easier to remember.

Balancing Stress and Academic Success

A certain level of stress is necessary to motivate students to do their best, but excessive stress can be counterproductive. It’s crucial to recognise the importance of integrating stress relief techniques into the curriculum, particularly during exam periods.

Workshops and programs at Paradigm Mathematics include deep breathing exercises that help students calm their minds before a test or when feeling overwhelmed. These techniques encourage students to approach challenges with clarity and composure, creating an environment where they feel supported and confident in seeking help.

Eventually, the goal is to empower students to build resilience and feel confident to tackle challenges. By managing stress and approaching difficulties with a positive mindset while helping them develop skills that will serve them beyond their academic years.

In Conclusion

By rethinking the approach to education and shifting the focus from grades to growth, It’s crucial that an education institute helps students develop a genuine love for learning.
