S3 Pilots the Kit-Fit Programme for the Purrfect Stroke Rehabilitation Session

Stroke Support Station (S3) introduced a new four-part series, the Kit-Fit Programme, designed to enhance the social, emotional and physical well-being of stroke survivors. The pilot programme, which was held in collaboration with Wildflower Studio at the Enabling Village, featured four stroke survivors from S3 interacting with feline friends through art jamming, play time and more. The series concluded on 26 September 2024.

Incorporating play into therapy

With support from S3’s occupational therapists, the programme is tailored to meet the unique goals of each participant. It focuses on person-centred post-stroke care that supports stroke survivors improve mindful engagement, social connection, and elevate moods. Additionally, the multisensory experience aims to improve motor skills of participants.

While this may be a pilot programme, Teh Kaili, Senior Occupational Therapist at S3 has observed that it is beneficial in elevating moods and encouraging engagement with the participants. “We were delighted to see the positive impact the Kit-Fit Programme had on our stroke survivors. Over four weeks, we observed a noticeable improvement in their moods and engagement. Stroke survivors sometimes face emotional challenges while recovering, and such interaction with the cats provided a unique and enjoyable experience that contributed significantly to their overall well-being.”

“The Kit Fit Programme has been a delightful experience. Since my husband joined, he is more engaged, responsive, and happier. Interacting with cats has helped him relax and it has also been incredibly heartwarming to watch him participate in these activities,” said Mdm Samantha Tan, spouse and caregiver to Mr Chia Kim Hwee, S3 stroke survivor.

S3 and Wildflower Studio are exploring the possibility of offering the Kit-Fit Programme as part of S3’s regular Wellness Programmes. By continuing to collaborate and adapt the activities to meet the unique needs of stroke survivors, they aim to provide a valuable, holistic and enjoyable experience for individuals in recovery.

In celebration of World Stroke Day, the S3 Open House was held on 24 October at the Enabling Village. With a special guest appearance by Suhaimi Yusof, programme highlights include a rehabilitation gym viewing, kickboxing and hand chimes taster workshops, and human library sessions.
