The Healing Power of Sound

“Sound is the medicine of the future” – The sleeping prophet Edgar Cayce

Ancient civilizations and cultures such as the Egyptians, Tibetans, and Aborigines have all used sound, music, and mantra chanting in their healing rituals. This makes sound healing one of the oldest and most natural forms of healing available and known to mankind. In our modern day and age, holistic healing practitioners use the term “toning” to describe the use of sound waves to balance, harmonise and synchronise cellular frequencies back to their original, natural and healthy state of vibrational resonance. So how exactly does sound heal us?

Sound energy is not only heard, but can also be felt via vibrations and can even be seen. Cymatics is the art and science of making sound wave patterns visible through the medium of water, sand, pastes, etc. The resulting patterns look like beautiful and intricate sacred geometrical mandala shapes. Cymatics was pioneered by the late Swiss medical doctor and scientist, Hans Jenny who did an investigation of periodic wave phenomena by conducting experiments using pure tones and simple sine wave vibrations within the audible range. He managed to animate powders, pastes, and liquids into life-like free flowing shapes and forms, which mirrored geometric patterns found throughout nature, art and architecture that is based on the golden ratio.

When sound waves enter the auditory canals of our ears, they are immediately converted into electrical signals and impulses by the auditory nerves as they travel up into the auditory cortex, which is the part of the brain that processes sound. Once the sound vibrations reach our brains, various chemical responses are being triggered and produced. This process alters our emotions by the release of happy, feel-good hormones and neurotransmitters that positively affect both our physiology and our moods.

Music of the Spheres

Musica universalis which literally means “universal music”, or more popularly known as the “music of the spheres” is a philosophical concept that regards mathematical proportions in the movements of the heavenly celestial bodies such as the Sun, Moon and planets as a form of vibrational music. From ancient Greece to the renaissance, great philosophers and mathematicians such as Pythagoras also surmised that celestial bodies made sound vibrations through orbital resonance. The music of the spheres is not actually audible to the human ear, but modern composers have attempted to create musical scores inspired by the concept and based upon the mathematical proportions of the orbits of the celestial bodies.

Music is the language of the soul and has the ability to cross cultural barriers, and unite people together. Sound in the form of music inspires and uplifts us. Helping us to better express ourselves and communicate with one another. Listening to music floods our brains with the happy chemical dopamine, as well as oxytocin, a natural painkiller that allows us to better bond with others. Music has been shown to increase our IQs and improve our memories, so suffice to say music can technically makes us smarter. Harmonic overtoning, humming, chanting mantras, speaking in tongues or light language are also forms of vibrational music that heal and empower us.

The Solfeggio Frequencies

The Solfeggio frequencies contain the six pure tonal notes that were once used to make up the ancient musical scale. These are the same sound frequencies used in Gregorian chants. The specific tones of the Solfeggio frequency were used to unite man with the creator by undoing all the limitations and conditionings that causes separation from Godsource. The Solfeggio frequencies were so effective that they undermined the control of the Catholic Church, so much so that 152 of these Gregorian chants were conveniently “lost” and went into oblivion for a long time. However, one of those sacred chants featuring all six Solfeggio notes and known as, “The Hymn to St. John the Baptist,” has finally re-emerged.

Dr Joseph Puleo, a naturopathic physician and one of America’s leading herbalists began his extensive research into the Solfeggio frequencies in the mid-1970’s. In Puleo’s examination of the Holy Bible, he found in the Book of Numbers: chapter 7, verses 12-83 a pattern of six repeating codes around a series of sacred numbers: 3, 6 and 9. When he deciphered these codes using the ancient Pythagorean method of reducing the numbers to their single digits, the codes revealed a series of six electromagnetic sound frequencies that correspond to the six missing tones of the ancient Solfeggio scale.

The great genius Nikola Tesla once famously said, “If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6 and 9, then you would hold a key to the universe.” The 3, 6, and 9 that he was referring to are the fundamental root vibrations of the Solfeggio frequencies that deeply penetrate the conscious and subconscious mind, thereby stimulating inner healing. Each Solfeggio frequency is comprised of a specific tone required that integrates your energy fields back to its original healthy state, thus keeping your body, mind and spirit in perfect harmonic balance.

The main six Solfeggio frequencies are:

UT – 396 Hz – Liberates guilt and fear

RE – 417 Hz– Clears negativity/ Removes subconscious blockages

MI – 528 Hz – Transformation and miracles/ DNA repair/ Love

FA – 639 Hz – Connections/ Relationships/ Unity

SOL – 741 Hz – Expression/ Solutions/ Detoxification

LA – 852 Hz – Awakens intuition/ Return to spiritual order

Brainwave Entrainment

Brainwave entrainment, also known as brainwave synchronisation or neural entrainment is a method and procedure that stimulates one’s own brainwave frequencies to match up and synchronise with a periodic stimulation of pulsed light or sound vibrational frequencies corresponding to an intended brainwave state for the purpose of inducing a deep state of hypnosis, trance, relaxation or meditation. Brainwave entrainment is really nothing new. Ceremonial chambers acoustically tuned to specific brainwave frequencies have been found dating back to as early as the Bronze Age. Another example shows that the ancient Greeks made use of flickering sunlight shining through a rapidly spinning wheel to induce altered states of consciousness.

Brainwave entrainment lulls a person’s mind into the alpha, theta and delta brain wave frequency states, thereby inducing a peaceful and tranquil meditative state. When a tonal sound is played to one ear, and a different tone is being played into the other, the two hemispheres of the brain connect and sync up, creating a third tone internally in the brain which is referred to as a “binaural beat”. A binaural beat synchronizes the brain, providing greater clarity, a calm centeredness, and more effective coherence between the mind and the physical body. The rhythm of these binaural beats slows down one’s brain wave patterns from a busy and active brain wave state which we call Beta (13-30 cycles per second or Hz), to Alpha (8-13Hz) which is a light relaxed state similar to daydreaming, to Theta (4-8Hz) which is a deep meditative state, and finally Delta (0.5-4Hz) which correlates to slow wave or dreamless sleep.

While listening to binaural beats via headphones, most people easily fall into a state of deep relaxation, which leads to a release of stress, tension and emotional blockages. Another newer method of brainwave entrainment utilises isochronic tones instead of binaural beats, and is found to be just as effective, if not more so. Many people report emerging from these brainwave entrainment experiences feeling much lighter, refreshed, rejuvenated and revitalized.

Our modern day musical standard tuning is the A 440 Hz frequency and is slightly out of sync from the original musical tuning used by our ancestors. The current 440 HZ frequency that is being adopted and used by the current mainstream music industry is more dissonant and disharmonic, and was deliberately changed from the original 432 HZ frequency used by classical music composers which is more harmonious with nature and our bodies. The difference of 8HZ is the electromagnetic energetic frequency being emitted by the Earth itself, or what is known as the “Schumann Resonance”, named after physicist Winfried Otto Schumann who first discovered and documented it mathematically back in 1952. This magical 8Hz is technically the heartbeat of our planet. Thus, 432Hz as a multiple of 8Hz is the harmonic intonation of nature and the natural order of things. By listening to 432Hz tuned music, we release resistance and energetic blockages, while expanding our consciousness by intuitively connecting with the vast storehouse of knowledge of the universe that surrounds us.
