Reunion Dinner at Home, Minus the Fuss

The Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year is a bit like Thanksgiving for us and with that is the traditional reunion dinner where the whole extended family gathers together. If you think that having a dinner at a restaurant as suggested previously is too impersonal, you can still gather at home minus the fuss of cooking while tucking into delicious fare! Here are some suggestions to help you usher in the New Year!

Healthy Yu Sheng

Tossing Yu Sheng (a.k.a. Louhei) is something uniquely Singaporean and despite the abundance of vegetables (it is mostly made up of shredded carrots and radish), it is the oil and plum sauce which often makes the dish slightly less than healthy. Nonetheless, it is still a salad and great way to get in those veggies as well as omega-3 from the raw fish.

Prosperity Yusheng from Taste.Swiss Butchery (S$48.80)

If you’re doing this at home, you can save yourself a lot of trouble by either buying the base ingredients from the supermarket such as Cold Storage (only available in-store), NTUC Fairprice (only available in-store) or Redmart. Do note that you will still need to shred your own radish and carrots, unless you buy from restaurants or places such as Taste.Swiss Butchery where they will deliver fresh or is up for self-collection on 15th to 18th February.

Tip: Swap the given oil (usually peanut oil) with olive oil to save on the saturated fats. Drizzle less oil and plum sauce to save on the unwanted calories.

Hot Pot Delights

Taste.Swiss Butchery has put together several Festival Special Combo Meals which includes homestyle broth and serves 4 to 6 people. Choose from their Frish Seafood Basket (S$48) which has sliced red snapper, Japanese scallops, prawns and shin’sen imitation crab stick; Swiss Butchery Special (S$48) that comes with wagyu chuck eye roll shabu, Iberico pork belly shabu, US pork collar shabu, Swiss Butchery pork cheese cocktail and homemade pork meatballs. If there are 10 to 12 people, they also have the Family Reunion Dinner (S$148) which has the wagyu chuck eye roll shabu, stripling AMG shabu, Iberico pork belly shabu, Iberico pork collar shabu, bamboo lobster, Japanese scallops, Angka prawns, sliced red snapper, oyster, homemade pork meatballs and premium cuttlefish balls.

If you prefer to pick and choose what you have in your hotpot, you can easily select online from either Cold Storage’s Chinese New Year promotion or Redmart’s Reunion Dinner & Feasting promotion. Both of which can be delivered to your doorstep.

From the oven

Roast Pork Belly from Swiss Butchery

If your family is not into hotpot, then perhaps traditional roasts are in order. One such dish would be Roast Pork Belly and although we do not recommend eating this often, it is ok to enjoy it in small amounts once in a while. Swiss Butchery’s famous Roast Pork Belly goes at S$28.80 (for about 1.2kg) while Char’s goes at S$7 per 100g (min. order of 300g).

The sweet stuff

Sugar-free Moringa Chocolate Chip Cookies

We are all in a rush to stock up on Chinese New Year goodies and we all know that most baked treats are full of sugar, butter and all that ‘bad’ stuff which aren’t that great for our bodies unless we hit the gym faithfully as well as pace ourselves in terms of the amount of goodies we put into our bellies.

Well, we wouldn’t be The Wellness Insider if we didn’t have some healthier options for you! Chef Felicien Cueff of Felicien Gourmand has started to come up with sugar-free and gluten-free sweet treats that everyone can enjoy. For Chinese New Year, he has come up with Moringa Chocolate Chip Cookies which features powder from the Moringa Oleifera plant – touted to be yet another nutritious food which is rich is antioxidants, lowers blood sugar, lowers cholesterol and inflammation¹. You can view Chef Felicien’s full goodies list and order through his Facebook page here where you can either WhatsApp him or message him through Facebook.

Swiss Butchery has also specially brought in some homemade goodies and one of the more interesting ones is the Bamboo Charcoal Egg Rolls. They aren’t too sweet but still has that delightful egg flavour and the charcoal will definitely help to absorb the fats from all the other goodies consumed in the same seating.

Do note that the order period for Taste.Swiss Butchery starts from now till 26th February, with no deliveries on 15th to 18th February, and self-collection is subjected to store operation timing. They’re open from 8am to 8pm except on 15th February where they will close at 5pm and whole day closed on 16th February. For online orders, do also note on the delivery period as there might be a delivery blackout period.
