Singapore’s National Marathon Enters a New Chapter

Singapore’s only national marathon is entering a new phase in 2026, with a refreshed identity, a new organiser and a major shake-up in sponsorship.

For years, the event was almost synonymous with Standard Chartered. That long-standing association helped build the marathon into what it is today — a flagship event on Singapore’s sporting calendar.

Now, that era is effectively over.

The race has been rebranded as the BYD Singapore International Marathon presented by adidas, marking a significant shift not just in naming, but in positioning.

From Legacy Sponsor to New Money

Standard Chartered isn’t disappearing entirely — it remains involved as the official bank — but it is no longer the face of the marathon.

Instead, BYD takes over as title sponsor and adidas stepping up as presenting sponsor.

This isn’t a subtle transition. It reflects a broader shift in where the money (and influence) is coming from. BYD has grown aggressively in Singapore over the past two years, and this sponsorship feels less like a branding exercise and more like a statement of market dominance.

At the same time, adidas’ expanded role signals a move towards deeper brand integration, particularly in merchandise, race gear and overall event experience.

A Reworked Race Experience

Beyond sponsorship, the format of the marathon is also changing.

The 2026 edition will be spread across three days in early December, with different race categories scheduled across multiple time slots instead of being compressed into a single day.

More notably, organisers are introducing a cap of 52,000 participants.

That’s a deliberate move. For years, large races have struggled with overcrowding, bottlenecks and diminishing runner experience. Capping participation suggests a shift towards quality over scale — something that more mature marathon markets have already adopted.

Not Just a Race Anymore

The organisers are also repositioning the marathon as a year-round platform rather than a once-a-year event.

This includes structured training programmes, stronger ties with running communities, and collaborations with both local businesses and international brands.

On paper, it sounds like a more holistic approach: turning the marathon into part of a broader lifestyle ecosystem rather than a standalone race weekend.

The question is whether this will genuinely benefit runners, or simply create more commercial touchpoints.

When a Name Gets Too Long

There’s also the elephant in the room: the name.

“BYD Singapore International Marathon presented by adidas” isn’t exactly concise.

Layer in the naming rights for individual race categories — BYD Marathon, adidas Half Marathon, Standard Chartered 10km — and the event starts to feel fragmented.

At what point does branding start to dilute identity?

For a national event, that tension matters. The marathon isn’t just another commercial property; it carries cultural weight. Over-branding risks turning it into something that feels more like a sponsored activation than a shared national experience.

What This Means Going Forward

For runners, the changes could be positive — better crowd control, improved race conditions, and a more thoughtfully designed experience.

From a business standpoint, this is clearly a reset. New organiser, new sponsors, new structure — all pointing towards a more commercially optimised model.

But the bigger question is longevity.

Standard Chartered’s involvement lasted decades. That kind of continuity helped build trust, recognition and identity.

Whether BYD’s sponsorship will have the same staying power or whether this is part of a shorter, more transactional cycle remains to be seen.
