The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has issued an urgent safety alert after discovering that HW Beauty Serbuk Campuran Kurma, Madu & Limau Kasturi, a product marketed as a natural herbal remedy, contains undeclared potent steroids and a strong prescription-only painkiller. Despite being promoted as a traditional blend for joint pain, gout, and general wellness, the product poses significant health risks and should not be consumed.

Why Hidden Steroids Are Dangerous

The product was found to contain dexamethasone and prednisolone, both of which are powerful steroids typically used for inflammation under strict medical supervision.
When taken unsupervised, steroids can lead to:

  • High blood sugar and potential onset of diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Reduced immunity and higher risk of infection
  • Bone and muscle weakening, including osteoporosis
  • Cushing’s syndrome, characterised by weight gain, swelling, and a rounded “moon face”
Stopping steroids abruptly can also be dangerous, leading to adrenal insufficiency—symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, severe weakness, and in extreme cases, shock.

Additional Risks from Diclofenac

The herbal mix was also found to contain diclofenac, a potent anti-inflammatory drug that should not be used without a doctor’s guidance, especially for individuals with kidney or heart conditions.

Long-term or unsupervised use can cause:

  • Serious stomach bleeding
  • Worsening kidney function
  • Higher risk of heart attack or stroke
Some suspected cases of kidney injury and Cushing’s syndrome have already been reported among individuals who consumed the product.

Advice for Consumers

Individuals who have taken the product should seek medical attention promptly, especially if they notice unusual swelling, fatigue, changes in facial appearance, or persistent pain.
Consumers are also advised to:

  • Avoid purchasing supplements from unverified or unknown online sellers
  • Be cautious of products claiming fast results or having “no side effects”
  • Choose established pharmacies and retailers when buying health products
  • Consult healthcare professionals for chronic health concerns instead of relying on unverified remedies
  • Report questionable or suspicious health products to the relevant authorities

Important Reminder for Sellers

Retailers and online sellers are urged to stop offering this product immediately. Strict penalties—including fines and imprisonment—can be imposed for selling products adulterated with undisclosed pharmaceutical ingredients.
