The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has issued a public warning against the consumption of a product called Setia Herba, which was marketed online as a “100% authentic herbal” remedy. Despite these claims, laboratory tests by HSA have revealed that the product actually contains two potent steroids (dexamethasone and prednisolone) as well as diclofenac, a powerful anti-inflammatory painkiller.

What Happened?

A consumer reportedly experienced pain relief after consuming Setia Herba for knee pain. The product was purchased via TikTok and promoted as a traditional remedy capable of relieving joint pain, gout, and more. Alarmingly, it was marketed using a fake “laboratory test certificate” and sold on platforms like Shopee, Carousell, and Lazada. HSA has since worked with these platforms to remove the listings.

Why This Is Dangerous

The undeclared ingredients found in Setia Herba are far from harmless:

1. Dexamethasone and Prednisolone
These are strong steroids typically prescribed for inflammatory conditions under medical supervision. Prolonged, unsupervised use can lead to:

  • High blood pressure and elevated blood sugar
  • Osteoporosis and weakened muscles
  • Increased risk of infections
  • Cushing’s syndrome (moon face and upper body obesity)
  • Severe withdrawal symptoms if discontinued abruptly

2. Diclofenac
This is a potent painkiller that can cause:

  • Serious gastric bleeding
  • Heart complications such as heart attacks and stroke (especially with long-term use or in people with pre-existing conditions)

Advice for Consumers

  • Avoid products from unknown online sources, especially those with bold claims or suspicious certifications.
  • Consult a medical professional before taking any supplement, especially if it claims to cure or relieve chronic conditions.
  • Do not stop taking Setia Herba abruptly if you’ve been consuming it regularly—it contains steroids and may cause serious withdrawal effects.
  • Report suspicious products to HSA at 6866-3485 or via email at [email protected].

Advice for Sellers

Anyone selling Setia Herba should cease immediately. HSA has stated that they will take strong enforcement action, including fines of up to SGD 10,000 and/or imprisonment for up to 2 years.

Despite being promoted as a “natural” supplement, Setia Herba poses serious health risks. As consumers become more wellness-conscious, it’s critical to stay vigilant and rely only on reputable brands and certified sources.
