The Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) spotlights local comedian pioneers Wang Sha and Ye Feng in two new projects this July – a documentary, jointly produced with Mediacorp, and a special exhibition that showcases their journey in entertainment history and impact on local Chinese culture.
The documentary Legends of Singapore Comedy 逗笑人间60年 explores the duo’s enduring legacy and illuminates their impact on Singapore’s cultural tapestry. Featuring original footage, film memorabilia, posters and in-depth interviews with Mrs Wang Sha, Jack Neo, Robert Chua and more, the documentary will trace Wang Sha and Ye Feng’s legendary career that brought much laughter to many Singaporeans. This joint production between SCCC and Mediacorp celebrates the legacy of the iconic duo. In addition to reviving cherished memories for those who experienced their comedic mastery, the documentary also introduces younger generations to local comedic icons who significantly shaped the Singapore and regional entertainment scene.
In conjunction with the broadcast of the documentary, a four-month special exhibition Legends of Singapore Comedy: An Exhibition on Wang Sha & Ye Feng will be held at SCCC from 6 July to 5 November 2024. The exhibition showcases the lives of Wang Sha and Ye Feng and highlights their memorable performances and impact across four different periods. Adopting a chronological method of storytelling, the exhibition allows visitors to follow their journey through key milestones in their professional lives while offering insights into the development of Singapore’s entertainment scene through the years. The exhibition will include memorabilia showcasing the duo’s stage and screen performances.
Guest-of-Honour Minister for Communications and Information Mrs Josephine Teo graced the premiere of the documentary and launched the special exhibition at SCCC on 5 July 2024.
SCCC Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alvin Tan, said, “Through the documentary and the exhibition, we hope to feature Wang Sha and Ye Feng’s pioneering brand of comedy as a good example of our unique SINGAPO人 culture. We also hope that both the documentary and the exhibition will serve as multi-generational channels for grandparents and parents to share their memories of the duo’s comedy with their grandchildren and children, and in the process, bring Singaporeans closer together through shared moments of laughter.”
Ms Angeline Poh, Chief Customer & Corporate Development Officer of Mediacorp said, “Staying true to our commitment to tell Singapore stories, Mediacorp is proud to collaborate with SCCC in honouring the iconic comedic duo Wang Sha and Ye Feng. Their influence on Singapore’s entertainment scene is undeniable, and this initiative pays homage to their enduring legacy. We are confident that the documentary will evoke joy and nostalgia among their long-time fans while inspiring younger viewers with their timeless comedic brilliance.”
Other guests who attended the premiere were Wang Sha’s spouse, relatives and friends of the duo including artistes like Chen Shu Cheng, Zoe Tay, Hong Hui Fang, Brandon Wong and more.
