Join NEX in their journey towards advocating for environmental awareness through their new campaign, Green Living @ NEX, that will be happening from 16 March to 23 April 2023. Through a series of green initiatives by the mall and in collaboration with partners such as local circular fashion enterprise, Cloop, NEX aims to encourage and reward eco-friendly choices in line with the mall’s commitment towards eco-consciousness.
Recycle your textiles with Cloop
As part of the new campaign, NEX is teaming up with Cloop to run a textile donation drive from 13 – 16 April 2023. The Cloop Textile Recycling bin will be located at Event Plaza, Basement 2. From 12 – 8pm, shoppers are welcome to donate their clean pre-loved textiles for the reuse, upcycle and recycle process. The Cloop Textile Recycling Bin accepts clothes, bags, shoes, accessories, belts, caps/hats, and household items such as toys, pillows, and linens in any clean and dry condition. It is recommended that the donated textiles are packaged into any bag and tied up before dropping it inside the bin.
With a mission to reduce fashion overconsumption and waste, Cloop helps consumers close the textile loop with solutions for unwanted textiles and sustainable shopping alternatives such as Fashion Swap!, Open Wardrobe, and Curated Bag. Apparels are circulated within the community through a Cloop Cycle – Collect, Curate, Circulate, and Community. With the help of their ISO-certified recycling partner, Life Line Clothing, there are now more than 250 textile recycling bins in Singapore and NEX is one of them. Items collected will be sorted into more than 500 categories with a zero waste to landfill process.

Ongoing green initiatives at NEX
NEX has been actively making strides and working towards a greener future in various aspects of their operations through architectural considerations and tenant engagements.
Tapping on sustainable energy sources, NEX will generate a total of peak capacity of 596.16 kWp and is capable of generating about 700,000 kWh over the course of a year with the use of 1,104 solar Photo Voltaics (PV) panels that will be installed across the rooftops of Shaw Theatre and the National Library Board. The energy generated will be used to power chiller operations in the mall.
In line with Singapore Green Plan 2030 for national sustainable development, NEX will be doing their part by specifying the application of cool mist paint for the mall’s proposed facade painting. The use of cool paint reflects solar radiation which minimises heat absorption through the building surface and prevents heat retention in the building’s interior. As such, this will help to reduce the ambient temperature of the building and mitigate the urban heat island effect.
NEX has also looked towards innovative water solutions by installing a rainwater harvesting tank with a water tank capacity of 10.5 cu m and will be adding an irrigation system in the near future. With a rain harvesting system in place, the mall will be able to harvest or collect 1,050 cu m of water based on 100 rain days that could be used to supply the mall’s demand for water.
Furthermore, NEX will be installing eco-friendly appliances in their newly upgraded toilets such as Simxin taps and Dyson Airblade dryers by this July. Simxin taps has a low flow rate of 0.7 L/min as compared to 2.4 L/min for other brands and offers innovative features to track water consumption for each tap. These aids in reducing the mall’s water consumption of up to 2,600 cu m per month and an annual reduction of more than 30,000 cu m of water. Furthermore, the mall has chosen the Dyson Airblade dryers for the toilet hand dryers as the dryers have a lower environmental impact in terms of carbon emissions and energy consumption as exemplified by its Carbon Trust certification.
To further propagate sustainable practices, NEX actively engages with tenants to be a part of their sustainable initiatives. In collaboration with F&B tenants, NEX has embarked on an initiative to collect used cooking oil. The collected used cooking oil is processed and converted into biodiesel and other commercial products. Over the past one year, the mall has collected a record of 3,200kg per month from 30 participating tenants.
Additionally, tenants such Cold Storage, FairPrice Finest, Food Republic and other F&B restaurants are encouraged to participate in the recycling of unsold perishable fruits or vegetables and food waste. The food waste is converted to compost fertilisers which are utilised for the landscaping at NEX.
While you make individual sustainable choices in your shopping, shoppers at NEX can also find comfort in knowing that the mall is similarly making conscious efforts to make your shopping journey a greener one.
