For months, I’ve been dealing with recurring abdominal and back pain — sharp, disruptive, and still without a clear diagnosis. After countless visits to A&E, specialists, and even a brief stint with traditional Chinese medicine, I finally got an appointment with someone the media has dubbed Dr Pain — Dr Bernard Lee of Singapore Pain Care Center.
I’ll be honest — I wasn’t sure what to expect.
The Visit Begins
When I arrived, everything seemed standard enough: check-in at the clinic, followed by a nurse asking me a series of detailed questions about my pain — where it starts, how it radiates, what medications I’ve taken, what makes it worse.
Then I was ushered into Dr Lee’s office, where I had to change into a gown for a proper physical assessment. What happened next wasn’t filmed — partly due to clinic policy, but also because I could barely focus on anything except the pain.
Screaming Through the Assessment
Dr Lee pressed on various points across my back and abdomen, trying to trace the source of the pain. And I screamed. Several times.
The pain was sharp, sudden, and unlike anything I’d experienced in previous consultations — and while it was overwhelming in the moment, it also gave me a strange sense of validation. Finally, someone was actively trying to findthe pain rather than just nod and prescribe something.
Why I’m Sharing This
I’m documenting this not for attention or sympathy, but because I know I’m not the only one out there living with invisible pain and unanswered questions. If you’ve been passed from one doctor to the next, told “it’s probably stress,” or asked to “come back when it’s worse” — I see you.
This part of the journey was raw, messy, and honestly, quite scary. But it was also the first time I felt like I might be getting closer to a real answer.
