Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Faces of Courage: Stories Beyond the Diagnosis, a free photo exhibition featuring young women aged 45 and below who have experienced breast cancer, alongside those who have supported them.
Held at COURTS NOJIMA (The Heeren), the exhibition brings together portraits and first-hand accounts that explore the impact of diagnosis and treatment on family life, relationships, careers and personal aspirations.
Stories beyond the diagnosis
Josephine Foong Shu Hua was preparing for IVF when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at 36. She and her husband Winston navigated her treatment and their plans to start a family, and welcomed twin daughters in 2026.
Also featured is Shermin Shu Shang Yuan, who was diagnosed in her early 30s while training for professional Muay Thai fights. Her fiancé, coach and wider Muay Thai community have helped her stay connected to the sport throughout treatment.
Presented as an immersive journey, the exhibition invites visitors to see each woman’s experience through her perspective, and to consider the difference that practical and emotional support can make.
Breast health awareness and support
The exhibition also highlights the importance of turning breast health awareness into action. BCF’s A Study in Pink: Young Women & Breast Cancer found that nearly nine in ten young women surveyed were not taking active steps for their breast health, citing concerns including uncertainty around self-examination and screening, treatment costs and competing daily priorities.
Through this exhibition, BCF hopes to foster conversations about early action and the support available to people affected by breast cancer.
