Following on from its sold-out three-day show in March 2023\, the 13th edition of the festival will feature a forward-thinking lineup showcasing a truly distinctive and diverse array of artists. From internationally acclaimed acts to regional and local gems\, this lineup promises an unparalleled experience that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. \nThe festival lineup includes Britpop legends and Saturday night headliners PULP\, Japanese rising superstar and Sunday headliner Joji\, J-pop superduo and Friday headliners Yoasobi\, American singer-songwriter Caroline Polachek\, and U.K. post-punk heroes IDLES. \nShowcasing the full\, world-class festival experience that music fans in the city have come to know and love\, December’s edition of Clockenflap will feature a spectacular outdoor environment featuring multiple stages\, a tempting array of irresistible F&B outlets\, and an eclectic lineup of must-see international\, regional and local acts. \nStar Power\nSome of music’s biggest names are set to grace the festival this year\, including Jarvis Cocker-fronted Britpop icons PULP\, who will be headlining on Saturday; Australian-Japanese singer-songwriter\, rapper and YouTube trailblazer Joji\, who will be headlining on Sunday with a performance that will also be the last show of his Pandemonium world tour; and Yoasobi\, the Japanese chart-toppers composed of producer Ayase and singer-songwriter Ikura\, who will be headlining on Friday. \nBest of Asia\nThe festival’s commitment to showcasing the region’s leading lights continues with a roster of acts that have helped put Asia on the musical map. Formed in Hebei in 1996\, alternative rockers Omnipotent Youth Society are one of the most influential bands in the history of Chinese rock. This rare opportunity for fans in Hong Kong to see the band live is going to be made even more special as they are playing back-to-back with seminal Chinese punk band The Fly\, with the lead singer and guitarist of Omnipotent Youth Society guesting with The Fly as they celebrate their 30th anniversary. Described as “generation-defining” by NME\, Taiwanese indie rockers No Party For Cao Dong are set to be one of this year’s must-sees. Regarded by fans as the voice for a pessimistic generation of Taiwanese youth\, the band surpassed singer-songwriter Jay Chou for most nominations during the 28th Golden Melody Awards\, and dethroned Mandopop institution Mayday to win Best Band in the same run. Having released their highly anticipated sophomore album The Clod 瓦合 in 2023\, their appearance at Clockenflap marks their first performance in Hong Kong since 2018. A big hit at Clockenflap in 2017\, J-pop mavericks Wednesday Campanella will perform their energetic live show with new lead singer Utaha at the festival for the first time\, Taiwan-based Hong Kong duo Running Youth make their Clockenflap debut with their distinctive blend of electronica and dreamy indie-pop\, while Taipei-born\, New York-based R&B chanteuse 9m88 returns to Clockenflap for the first time since her memorable set in 2018. And talented Chinese singer-songwriter Leah Dou makes a triumphant return to the Clockenflap stage to play the festival for the first time since 2015. \nSo Hot Right Now\nShowcasing artists that are riding the crest of a wave or set to explode is coded into Clockenflap’s DNA\, and fans can look forward to seeing a succession of acts that are ready to ignite the global zeitgeist. American singer-songwriter Caroline Polachek has turned heads with her critically acclaimed 2023 album Desire\, I Want to Turn Into You\, and U.S. teen sensation D4vd is another hot talent who’s been making waves this year. High-energy Japanese girl group Atarashii Gakko! are destined to be one of the festival’s most-talked-about acts\, while other highlights include American singer-songwriter Alex G\, Chinese singer/rapper Lexie Liu\, Welsh multi-instrumentalist Novo Amor and Canadian rapper singer and songwriter BBNO$. \nIndie Trailblazers\nClockenflap has an unrivalled reputation for bringing the world’s top indie acts to Hong Kong\, and this year is no different. Loved by critics and fans alike\, IDLES are set to bring their ferocious live show to Central Harbourfront\, as are fellow British post-punkers Squid. They’ll be joined by acclaimed U.K. alternative-indie band PREP\, Yorkshire rockers Yard Act and Canadian singer-songwriter Andy Shauf. \nMusic For Connoisseurs\nFans searching for something new or looking to satisfy their music geek tendencies will be spoiled for choice at the December 2023 edition of Clockenflap. China’s post-rock standard bearers Wang Wen and U.S. post-rock veterans Caspian will be demonstrating why they’re considered masters of the genre. Beijing-based post-punk duo Gong Gong Gong are sure to win legions of new fans with their distinctive stripped-back sound\, as will Japanese punk band Otoboke Beaver. And lovers of Japanese rock won’t want to miss the enduring envy\, who have been hugely influential in the country’s post-hardcore\, screamo and post-rock scenes for more than 30 years. \nElectrifying Electronica\nAs ever\, Clockenflap will have an eclectic lineup of DJs and top electronic acts that are guaranteed to get the dancefloor rocking and your feet moving. Legendary DJ/producer and former Underworld member Darren Emerson makes his long-awaited Clockenflap debut\, while Australian electro-house hellraisers Peking Duk return to the festival for the first time since 2018. Other highlights include UK champions of bass-drenched slammers Deekline & Ed Solo\, Berlin-based DJ/producer and owner of the 803 Crystal Grooves label Cinthie and Hong Kong-based classical and jazz violinist turned DJ/producer Xiaolin. \nFestival Favourites\nSome acts are just made for festivals\, with an uncanny ability to create magical moments that unite the crowd\, and Clockenflap wouldn’t be Clockenflap without a few of those on the lineup. Tearaway troubadours Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls will be on hand to serve up their distinctive blend of indie\, punk and folk\, multi-award winning Korean traditional music group ADG7 are jetting in to deliver their unique fusion of folk and offbeat pop\, and British-Taiwanese musician/producer Kamaal Williams will be blurring the boundaries between jazz\, hip-hop\, R&B and EDM. \nHong Kong Heroes\nShowcasing the depth and breadth of the local indie scene\, the festival welcomes cerebral local hip-hop collective Yack Studio for their debut live performance at the festival. Featuring members from both Hong Kong and Taiwan\, Science Noodles capture the essence of old-school lo-fi with their dreamy songs and catchy hooks. SUMMARY:Ho Tzu Nyen: Time & the Tiger
DESCRIPTION:This month\, Singapore Art Museum (SAM) opens Ho Tzu Nyen: Time & the Tiger\, a solo exhibition by critically acclaimed Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen that features eight major installations\, including a new commission titled T for Time. Co-organised by SAM and Art Sonje Center (ASJC)\, this is the first mid-career survey devoted to Ho’s practice over the past two decades\, drawing largely from SAM’s collection. The exhibition will travel to numerous venues across the world\, after its premiere at SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark from 24 November 2023 to 3 March 2024. \nOne of the most internationally recognised contemporary artists from Singapore\, Ho is a visual artist\, writer\, theatre-maker\, and filmmaker whose practice has continuously challenged conventional hierarchies in our understanding of the past. His works are narrated through a constellation of unruly characters\, acting as mediums through which Ho engages with the nature of identity\, storytelling\, and the passage of time in Asia\, particularly since the Second World War. It is through these critical engagements that Ho’s practice has gained an international following. \nT for Time (2023–ongoing)\, as part of Ho Tzu Nyen: Time & the Tiger. \nThe title of the exhibition\, Time & the Tiger\, alludes to the primary sources of Ho’s work: the fascination with the dispersion of tigers across Asia over time. With glacial shifts and rising sea levels across two million years\, the tiger went from roaming freely across Asia to being on the brink of extinction today. More recently\, tigers also were a potent symbol of power during Japan’s invasion of Southeast and East Asia; while the weretigers of the Malay world serve as a bridge linking humans and ancestral memory. Tigers\, in other words\, allow us to think about time through various scales: from the geological scale of transformation to the Asian continent to the cosmological scale of ancestral memory. For Ho\, time is not just a linear progression\, but a multi-dimensional matrix\, shaped and reshaped by cultural\, ecological\, and historical forces\, where the tiger serves as a powerful emblem of its fluidity and complexities. While shaping this exhibition\, Ho mused\, “The question is\, can all these scales of time co-exist and thrive simultaneously? It is this possibility that fascinates me.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHo Tzu Nyen\, Hotel Aporia (2019)\, as part of Ho Tzu Nyen: Time & the Tiger. \n\nPresenting Two Decades of Artistry and Beyond\nTaking over Galleries 1 and 2 at SAM\, with an off-site presentation at the public libraries\, Ho Tzu Nyen: Time & the Tiger brings together major artworks drawn largely from SAM’s collection\, which holds the largest collection of Ho’s works to date\, including: The Cloud of Unknowing (2011); The Name (2015-2017) and The Nameless (2015); CDOSEA (2017); One or Several Tigers (2017); and Hotel Aporia (2019). These iconic works form the curatorial core of the exhibition\, with Hotel Aporia displayed as a central work. \nFirst commissioned for the 2019 Aichi Triennale as a site-specific installation\, Hotel Aporia is a multi-channel video installation that reimagines a gathering of characters caught up in the heady mix of Japan’s militant nationalism and imperial ambitions. The work considers the long-lasting implications of Japan’s militant nationalism on the region\, as well as the complexities and convoluted relationships that emerged from it. For its presentation at SAM\, a series of pavilions have been constructed\, outfitted with tatami mats and shoji screens\, to create an immersive experience in the architectural style of a Japanese inn. \nCentral to his practice in the past two decades is The Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia (2012 –)\, an evolving framework under which the artist has produced and organised works such as The Name\, The Nameless and One or Several Tigers. An ongoing project\, Ho continues to utilise it to gather research materials and build a parallel model of the region’s complexities set against a global history of the Left\, of decolonisation and imperialism—a reflection of Ho’s transformative practice over the years. \nAs Eugene Tan\, Director of SAM\, and Lead Curator for Time & the Tiger puts it\, “Ho’s art is emblematic of a radicalism\, perpetually in motion. It sheds its skin when it needs to; it evades easy categorisation and dodges classification. Yet\, one thing remains certain: in a time where complexity is reduced to soundbites\, Ho’s art serves as a reservoir of reflection and a critique. Ho’s research and interest in the construction of history\, especially within the region of Southeast Asia\, is aligned with SAM’s focus on spotlighting how global and contemporary issues can be understood through a Southeast Asian perspective. We look forward to audiences immersing themselves in the worlds and narratives he has created over the past two decades.” \nAbout the New Commission: T for Time\nAs part of SAM’s efforts to champion Singaporean artists\, the museum has collaborated with Ho on artwork commissions over the years\, with the most recent installation H for Humidity (2022) presented as part of SAM’s group exhibition Lonely Vectors. For this survey exhibition\, the museum has commissioned the new work T for Time (2023)—a two-channel video installation that engages with the cultural histories of time and time-keeping traditions across Asia. Time is a critical dimension that underlies most\, if not all\, of Ho’s works produced over the last two decades. \nArtist Ho Tzu Nyen says: “T for Time is\, in a certain sense\, the most personal work I have made\, and yet nothing of my person is in the work at all. I would say there are parallels here and there that are embedded in it. Much of its foundations lies in the transformative 1980s\, a pivotal decade in my rather middle-class and relatively comfortable childhood in Singapore. The 1980s symbolized a significant shift on a grander scale too; as Southeast and East Asian economies thrived\, giving rise to the term ‘Tiger Economies’. Essentially\, T for Time is a collection of many anecdotes about time\, and it comes from different historical moments\, cultures\, but it makes no claim to be universal. In the end\, the work still became a subjective work\, rooted very much in my specific moment\, in my specific trajectory.” \nThe work is co-commissioned with the exhibition’s co-organisers ASJC\, and in collaboration with international partners including M+\, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo\, and Sharjah Art Foundation. This partnership across institutions for the new commission is emblematic of SAM’s effort to broaden and globalise the production and curatorial support given to contemporary artists from Singapore and the region. \n\n\n\n\nT for Time: Timepieces (2023 – ongoing)\, as part of Ho Tzu Nyen: Time & the Tiger.\nOne or Several Tigers (2017)\, as part of Ho Tzu Nyen: Time & the Tiger\n\n\n\n\nConnecting audiences with Ho’s practice and body of works\nAs a leading institution in Singapore and Southeast Asian contemporary art scene\, SAM is working closely with art institutions across the globe to profile Ho on the international stage and provide opportunities for international audiences to engage with his body of works. Led by Eugene Tan\, Director of SAM and Sunjung Kim\, Artistic Director of Art Sonje Center\, the exhibition’s curatorium is comprised of Shabbir Hussain Mustafa\, Kenneth Tay\, Selene Yap and Angela Pinto (from SAM)\, as well as Jang Un Kim and Je Yun Moon (from ASJC). Time & the Tiger will travel to ASJC (Seoul)\, before moving to Hessel Museum of Art (New York) by June 2024. Both SAM and ASJC are also currently in discussions with various international partners across Asia and Europe to further travel the exhibition. \nWhile key works of Ho Tzu Nyen from SAM’s collection will continue to form the core of Time & the Tiger\, the presentations overseas will each be further tailored according to the curatorial interests and institutional contexts of the respective partners. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue featuring critical texts by the exhibition’s curators and the artist’s writings. \nIn Singapore\, as SAM continues to bring contemporary art closer to local communities by presenting art programming in everyday spaces\, visitors can also look forward to catching 4×4 – Episodes of Singapore Art (2005)—a television series on pivotal moments in Singapore’s art history that Ho had originally created for broadcast on national television—at the public libraries of Jurong\, Queenstown\, Tampines and Woodlands. \nAt Tanjong Pagar Distripark\, there will be complementary public programmes available daily alongside the exhibition\, running until March 2024. These include an artist’s keynote lecture\, storytelling sessions\, family-friendly activations and puzzle games\, and curator tours. \nThe exhibition will be showing at SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark in Singapore from 24 November 2023 to 3 March 2024\, ASJC in Seoul from 3 June to 4 August 2024\, and Hessel Museum of Art in New York from 29 June to 1 December 2024. General Admission (free for Singaporeans and PRs) applies for SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. More information on Ho Tzu Nyen: Time & the Tiger can be found at . \n\nImages: Singapore Art Museum

SUMMARY:Great Green Run
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability-centric business communication solutions platform\, Greenbees and international sports event management company\, TriFactor announced the launch of its first sustainability-driven ‘Great Green Run’ today\, which is set to take place on 24 September 2023 at Great Green Run’s venue partner\, Marina Barrage. \nGreat Green Run is designed to serve as a platform to rally and inspire individuals\, corporations and communities into sustainability advocacy and action. In efforts to promote sustainability\, Great Green Run will also be one of the first sporting events to publicly share its carbon footprint and sustainability initiatives report which will be reviewed and verified by the Singapore Environmental Council (SEC). In addition to this\, every participant is encouraged to make an individual sustainability pledge upon registration\, with options to choose from the five selected United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. \n5 Selected United Nations Sustainable Development Goals\n\n\n\nGood health and well-being\nS$3\n\n\nSustainable cities and communities\nS$11\n\n\nResponsible consumption & production\nS$12\n\n\nClimate action\nS$13\n\n\nLife below water\nS$14\n\n\n\n  \nThe run on 24 September 2023 at Marina Barrage will be divided into two categories – corporate and community run. For the corporate run\, more than 2\,000 professionals\, managers\, executives and technicians (PMETs) from over 50 multinational corporations (MNCs) as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are expected to participate. Among the notable corporations that have shown their interest are RSM Singapore\, CapitaLand\, CIMB Singapore\, SISTIC Singapore and National Healthcare Group. On the other hand\, Great Green Run is expecting more than 3\,000 avid and leisure runners to take part in the community run. \nCIMB Singapore is the presenting sponsor of Great Green Run. The bank has been an active proponent of the Environmental\, Social\, and Governance (ESG) agenda and is the first ASEAN bank to sign the industry-led\, UN-convened Net-Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA)\, a member of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ). CIMB is also continuously stepping up on its sustainability innovation in order to achieve its ambition of becoming a leading ASEAN bank and a sustainability leader. Over the past two years\, CIMB Singapore has executed several significant sustainable financing transactions. In 2022\, CIMB Group doubled its sustainable finance target to RM60 billion by 2024 after having met its original target of RM30 billion two years ahead of schedule. \n \n“Awareness is the first step to any change. As a leading ASEAN bank\, our greater purpose is to advance customers and society towards a sustainable future. We advocate sustainable practices for ourselves as an organisation as well as encourage our people to actively participate in initiatives contributing to positive environmental and social impact. As the presenting sponsor of Great Green Run\, we hope to amplify the awareness on sustainability through our network of partners and communities\, and to inspire a positive change within our circle of influence on integrating sustainable practices in our daily lives\,” said Victor Lee\, Chief Executive Officer of CIMB Singapore. \n“TriFactor is determined to incorporate and champion sustainability practices in all our local and international TriFactor events\, spearheaded by Great Green Run. We are honoured to have CIMB Singapore onboard as our presenting sponsor in our inaugural event in Singapore and to be working together with several key government agencies and sustainability partners\,” said Elvin Ting\, Founder of Orange Room & TriFactor. \n“We are thrilled to organise our inaugural Great Green Run\, in partnership with TriFactor\, the leading multisport brand in Asia. With a strong aim to be the standard bearer of sustainable sporting events\, we wanted a running event because the activity itself has a relatively low environmental impact compared to other sports. We believe running connects people and builds community – you meet new people\, you spend time with people\, and you talk to people with collective shared values. As two purpose-driven organisations come together\, we understand the importance of embedding sustainability in everything that we do to create positive impacts across the business ecosystem\, as well as the community\,” said James Yeong\, Project Director of Great Green Run. \nSustainable development is an integral part of Singapore’s economic growth. As an enabling supporter of local and global sustainability standards\, Great Green Run supports and aligns with the Singapore Green Plan 2030 to advance Singapore’s national agenda on sustainable development. Great Green Run aspires to unite and educate individuals and corporations to build a grassroot movement to address a range of social needs\, while tackling climate change and environmental protection. \nIn addition\, Great Green Run has partnered with some of the leading sustainable territories in the world\, such as the Kingdom of Bhutan\, the world’s only carbon negative country\, and Lahti\, a city in Finland and 2021’s Green Capital of Europe. Great Green Run is also supported by some of the notable brands such as RSM Singapore\, ShopBack\, Tesla\, CapitaLand\, JustRunLah! and more. \nFor more information and to register for the run\, please visit https://greatgreenrun.com/ \n\nImages: Great Green Run
