SUMMARY:City of Others: Asian Artists in Paris\, 1920s–1940s
DESCRIPTION:City of Others: Asian Artists in Paris\, 1920s–1940s is a groundbreaking exhibition that presents the experiences of Asian artists in Paris during a time period that is critical in the story of modernism\, and modern art’s relationship to ‘the Other.’ \nMoving beyond the idea of Paris as an art world centre in this period\, City of Others aims to re-read the art history of the city from Asian perspectives. During this peak period of artistic migration to Paris\, there was a dynamic\, cross-cultural exchange of aesthetics and ideas. This will be the first time the Paris experiences of artists from different parts of Asia are presented extensively together\, resulting in new comparisons that offer an original and nuanced picture of Paris as a site for artistic exchange. This is in line with National Gallery Singapore’s interest in examining Southeast Asian perspectives and narratives in global art histories\, as the leading institution in Southeast Asian and Singaporean modern and\ncontemporary art. While National Gallery Singapore’s collection and long-term exhibitions focus on the specific modernities of our region\, City of Others also allows us to extend this regional perspective into a broader global history of modern art. \nPresenting different zones of the art world of Paris in the early 20th century\, City of Others explores how Asian artists lived\, worked and exhibited. The exhibition offers a nuanced exploration of Asian artists’ experiences of the time\, including: new research into the contribution of Asian artists and labourers to Art Déco; the presentation of Asian artists\nat major exhibitions and salons in Paris; and the impact of colonial networks and exhibition platforms on modern artists from Southeast Asia. It will illuminate the complex networks of migrant artists\, uncovering how these connections enabled artistic developments and career progression. By examining the reception of Asian art within national\, cultural\, and colonial contexts in Paris\, the show reveals how artists navigated the expectations of the European audience while simultaneously re-engaging with their own cultural identities. A particular focus will be on the realm of the decorative arts\, which served as an initial point of cultural exchange\, highlighting the collaborations between Asian artisans and French designers that mutually shaped aesthetic sensibilities and artistic practices during this dynamic period.\nThe exhibition will feature more than 200 artworks\, including paintings\, sculptures\, lacquerware\, and decorative art\, and a further 200 archives and historical images\, with many presented for the first time in Singapore. Audiences can look forward to works by major Asian artists like Foujita Tsuguharu\, Georgette Chen\, Le Pho\, Liu Kang\, Xu Beihong\nand Sanyu\, alongside lesser-known figures. \nA joint symposium by National Gallery Singapore and Musée Cernuschi will be held in Paris on 20 February 2025. It will feature a sharing of research by the two institutions\, the curatorial concerns related to Asian artists developing their practice in Paris\, and new research and conceptualisation generated by their respective exhibitions City of Others and\nTrois artistes vietnamiens en France : Lê Phô\, Mai-Thu et Vu Cao Dam (Pioneers of modern Vietnamese art in France). \nThis will be followed by an expanded symposium on Paris as a ‘City of Others’ on 16 and 17 August 2025 in Singapore. \nPrice: $25\nTickets: http://tickets.nationalgallery.sg/ \n\nImage: National Gallery Singapore

SUMMARY:Singapore Art Museum presents the homecoming of Seeing Forest
DESCRIPTION:Step into Seeing Forest\, presented for the first time in Singapore at Singapore Art Museum (SAM) at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. Returning from Venice\, this exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Robert Zhao Renhui invites visitors to immerse themselves in the multifaceted life of Singapore’s secondary forests—overlooked forests regrown from deforested land due to human intervention. Drawing on nearly a decade of research\, Zhao encourages audiences to look beyond our familiar cityscape and uncover the complex ecosystems that shape our natural environment. \nVisitors will be able to catch the full assemblage of videos and sculptural installations presented in Venice\, transforming SAM’s gallery space into an enveloping\, forested zone filled with sounds\, sights\, and stories that convey the richness of secondary forests. Through Zhao’s captivating scenes of these in-between spaces\, spot sambar deer that escaped from the local zoo in the 1970s\, Japanese sparrowhawks pausing for a drink and a wild boar giving birth in the forest next to the artist’s apartment. \nSeeing Forest was first presented at the Singapore Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (Biennale Arte 2024)\, widely recognised as the Olympics of the art world. From Venice to SAM’s home ground\, the exhibition invites audiences to discover a lesser-known side of Singapore\, and reflect on their place within these wild\, yet radically free environments. \n\n\n\nDates:\n15 January – 18 May 2025\n\n\nLocation:\nSingapore Art Museum at Tanjong Pagar Distripark\, Level 3\, Gallery 3 (Accessible via Lobby B)\n39 Keppel Road\, Tanjong Pagar Distripark\, Singapore 089065\n\n\nWebsite:\nhttps://www.singaporeartmuseum.sg/art-events/exhibitions/seeing-forest\n\n\nAdmission:\nGeneral Admission applies; Free for Singaporeans and PR. SUMMARY:Singapore’s Largest Free Meditation Event
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the demands of daily life? The familiar advice to “Just take a moment and breathe” often feels easier said than done. Yet\, there’s a profound truth behind this simple suggestion. In Singapore\, stress is an ever-present reality for many\, with 87% of individuals reporting feeling stressed in 2023\, which is notably higher than the global average. Alarmingly\, 16% of Singaporeans feel that their stress is “not manageable”. These statistics reflect the reality many face daily in our citystate. \nAs we approach the new year\, many are looking for fresh starts through diet trends or fitness fads. But what if the key to a healthier mind and body lies in a practice as ancient as time itself? Meditation has been shown to enhance mood\, boost focus\, and cultivate resilience – qualities we all need as we navigate life’s ups and downs. \nHis Holiness Shree Shivkrupanand Swami leading meditation and answering queries at Journey to Inner Peace 2018 \nHimalayan Samarpan Meditation is a transformative practice rooted in the timeless spiritual traditions of the Himalayas. Founded by His Holiness Shree Shivkrupanand Swami\, or ‘Swamiji\,’ this meditation technique is designed to offer profound simplicity and power\, providing a pathway to inner peace and self-realization. Baba Swami\, after years of intense spiritual training under the mentorship of Himalayan Gurus\, introduced Himalayan Samarpan Meditation to the world in 1994. Since then\, he has dedicated himself to sharing this practice globally\, empowering individuals with tools to access deep states of calm\, resilience\, and spiritual connection and inspiring numerous global platforms\, including Journey to Inner Peace (https://www.journey2innerpeace.com/) in Singapore. \nSince 2015\, Journey to Inner Peace has organized annual free-to-attend meditation events in Singapore\, led by His Holiness Shree Shivkrupanand Swami\, attracting over 1\,500 attendees each year. The organization also hosts daily and weekly group meditations at their Singapore headquarters\, creating a welcoming space for individuals to practice Himalayan Samarpan Meditation together. This consistent presence has fostered a strong community dedicated to well-being and soulful living\, providing Singaporeans with ongoing access to transformative meditation experiences. \nThe first Journey to Inner Peace meditation event in 2015\, drawing over 1\,800 people \nFree public event details\nDate: Saturday\, 9 November 2024\nVenue: Sands Expo and Convention Centre\, Level 3\, Hibiscus Ballroom\nDress code: Comfortable \n\nImages: Journey to Inner Peace

In supporting Singapore’s Green Plan 2030 as well as four of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal [(4) Good Health and Wellbeing\, (11) Sustainable Cities and Communities\, (12) Responsible Consumption and Production\, and (13) Climate Action]\, GGR seek to foster sustainability-centric lifestyles and actions\, like responsible production and consumption\, health and mental wellness. Senior Parliament Secretary Baey Yam Keng will be attending as the Guest of Honour\, with the Singapore Environment Council serving as the event’s Certification Partner. \nParticipants can choose between two distances – 5km and 10km – making the GGR suitable for athletes of all ages and experience levels. The minimum age for the 5km and 10km categories has been lowered to 7 and 13 years old\, respectively\, allowing more families to bond while staying active. The 5km and 10km runs are priced at $48 and $58\, respectively. The 10km event will start at 7:45 a.m.\, followed by the 5km event at 8:15 a.m\, both starting from the Marina Barrage. Runners will receive an interlek-certified run jersey and\, upon completion of run\, a unique finisher’s medal made from recycled wood. For every registration\, the organiser will donate $2 to Community Chest\, the philanthropy and engagement arm of the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) of Singapore\, supporting more than 100 social service agencies. \nThis year’s GGR promises an enriched experience with exciting new additions designed to inspire and promote sustainability within the community\, forming the perfect weekend activity for all. Central to the GGR 2024 is the vibrant Green Bazaar from October 12 to 13\, which will feature a specially curated selection of sustainability-centric vendors. Attendees can explore over 50 stalls offering a range of food & beverage options\, pre-loved and vintage retail selections as well as informative\, fun-filled workshops. \nThis year\, GGR welcomes new partners\, including homegrown zero e-waste sustainability platform myhalo and global automotive brand Omoda. As the event’s Official E-Waste Impact Partner\, myhalo aims to encourage sustainable device management and help participants extend their device lifespan. GGR participants can look forward to exclusive services and incentives including free custom-cut screen protectors to protect their devices as well as giveaways at the GGR. Omoda is GGR’s Official Car Partner\, and attendees of the GGR can get a first look at the recently launched all-electric Cat A Omoda at the event. \nParticipants will also stand a chance to win exciting prizes – including flights to Lahti\, Finland and Bhutan (inclusive of a half-day tour to see Bhutanese sustainable living in action\, and a local dinner for two) courtesy of the Ministry of Tourism\, Bhutan\, as well as Brompton bicycles – in the Lucky Green Draw conducted on October 12. GGR is proud to partner with Brompton\, a British brand Brompton recognised for its commitment to sustainability and recently awarded B Corp Certification for meeting high standards of verified performance\, accountability\, and transparency. \nTo enter the Lucky Green Draw\, runners must place the tear-off portion of their race bib into a box on event day. Winners will then be drawn from that box and upon being selected\, the winner will have to produce their race bib to claim their prize. But the fun has already begun with even more prizes up for grabs every week on GGR’s Facebook and Instagram. Instructions on how to enter the weekly giveaway can be found on the respective posts. \nPresenting sponsor\, CIMB Singapore has been an active proponent of the ESG agenda and is the first ASEAN bank to sign up to the industry-led\, UN-convened Net-Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA)\, a member of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ). The bank is also continuously stepping up on sustainability innovation to achieve its ambition to become a leading focused ASEAN bank and a sustainability leader. This includes the Cooler Earth Series – CIMB’s platform to engage and connect with stakeholders through a combination of innovative partnerships and financial solutions to build resilience while addressing challenging issues that affect wellbeing and livelihoods. In 2022\, CIMB Group announced its sustainable finance target of RM60 billion by 2024 under the Group’s Green\, Social\, Sustainable Impact Products and Services (“GSSIPS”) Framework. This target was achieved ahead of schedule\, leading to an increase in the target to RM100 billion by 2024. As of December 2023\, CIMB has mobilised over RM80 billion in sustainable finance and is on track to meet this revised target. \nRegistration for the GGR is now open and will end on September 8.
