SUMMARY:PEDALFEST Singapore 2023: Bicycle Art\, Films\, Performances & More
DESCRIPTION:With cycling now Singapore’s third most popular sport behind running and walking*\, it’s timely that the Republic hosts the first cycling lifestyle festival in Southeast Asia. \nHappening over the weekend of 11 and 12 February\, PEDALFEST SINGAPORE 2023 is dedicated to cyclists of all genres; allowing to them connect and meet over bicycle films\, sporting programmes\, spin activities and challenges\, health and wellness talks\, upcycling workshops and much more. \n\n  \n“Through PEDALFEST\, we hope to celebrate our bicycle culture with the support of the community whilst learning and sharing each other cycling experiences\,” explained Lyndon Yeo\, Managing Director of Firefly Connections\, the festival organiser. “Singapore has an extremely vibrant cycling scene. Aside from on-road or PCN cycling\, there is still a lot more like bicycle-related art\, upcycling or vintage movements\, fund-raisers and more. Cycling is more than a sport. For some\, it’s a lifestyle and we intend to celebrate that.” \nExtreme athlete turned record-breaking Artist ME set to ‘W.O.A’ audiences\n \nHeadlining the packed programme is Azmi Hussin\, more popularly known as ME\, a famous cartoonist\, caricaturist\, illustrator and muralist hailing from Penang\, Malaysia. \nKnown online for his inspirational TED talk ‘Art makes ME Fly’ and his Youtube video ‘W.O.A – Wheel of Art’\, Azmi will deliver a ‘live’ performance at Kallang using his BMX flatland skills to create a new abstract art piece. Those lucky enough will also get their caricatures drawn by him over the weekend. \nMAMIL\, a must-watch film for those who love road cycling\n \nLocal road cyclists\, affectionally known as ‘roadies’\, will probably want to bring their Significant Other to catch the screening of MAMIL (Middle Age Men in Lycra) – a documentary about why white-collar professionals transform into lycra-clad road warriors every weekend. \nNarrated by legendary Tour de France and cycling commentator Phil Liggett\, the film – which premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival – tries to uncover why middle-aged men are so passionate about riding expensive carbon bikes. \nDon’t miss Aunt Lotus & Her Dream Bicycle\n \nStarring veteran theatre practitioner Jalyn Han\, the Mandarin and Teochew language short film follows the story of Aunt Lotus\, a blind grandma who dreams of riding a bicycle again. Determined to fulfil her desire\, she constructs an unusual cycling simulation\, using nothing but common household items. \nThis local film written and directed by Kew Lin examines the theme of living with a sense of adventure and fearlessness in order to chase one’s dreams and is a must-watch for festival attendees. \nThe first rule of CycleFightClub is everyone talks about it\nIf action is what you need\, festive-goers can also sign up for CycleFightClub – a daily eCycling tournament – where riders compete one-on-one using smart trainers. Each day\, 32 shortlisted riders will compete in a single-elimination tournament with the last person standing winning $500 cash and an expenses-paid trip to an overseas cycling event. \nUpcycling makes a Green Impact at PEDALFEST\nIn support of the SG Green Plan\, eco-friendly practices such as water canisters to allow participants to fill their water bottles will be introduced\, while festive goers can also sign up for an Upcycling Workshops to reuse old bicycle rims and parts to create Bicycle Lamp Art to decorate their homes. \nCommunity Engagement and Fun for All Ages\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVintage bike lovers should make a beeline to the Ciclo e Caffe Community Corner to mingle and chat with former champion cyclists and fellow bike collectors. \nThe PEDALFEST SG Bicycle Photo Booth will also capture all festive goers in their cycling attire over two days. All photos – together with future photos of local cyclists taken all over the island in the next few months – will be compiled into a coffee book that will be launched at PEDALFEST 2024. \nParents with young children aged 6 or older can participate onsite to learn about road safety through Safe Cycling Academy clinics\, while adults can enjoy the spin activities using pedal-power stationary bikes to ‘light up the planets’ at the Pedal to the Stars zone. \nA day-pass cost S$38 and comes with a complimentary pack worth over S$50 including a limited edition PEDALFEST t-shirt. The first 500 festive goers each day gets to enjoy a cup of artisanal coffee. Tickets are going fast at https://pedalfest.peatix.com/ \nVisit http://fireflyconnections.org/events/pedalfest-singapore/ for more details \n\n*2020 National Sports Participation Survey by Sport Singapore \nImages: PEDALFEST Singapore

SUMMARY:NParks-AIA Explore a Route Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The challenge is conducted using the NParks Explore A Route (NEAR) app\, an updated version of the Coast-to-Coast (C2C) application that was first launched in 2019. The app continues to use interactive augmented reality (AR) elements to provide users with a curated walking experience\, as well as an online trail guide. The revamped app allows users to map their own trail and share it with others. \nThe goal is to encourage individuals to explore our green spaces with their family and friends and lead a healthier lifestyle. The challenge encourages park visitors to enjoy nature in a new way through the revamped app. AIA Singapore is NParks’ first partner that has come onboard to create a challenge on the revamped app. This is part of the life insurer’s commitment to support Singapore’s City in Nature vision for a more sustainable society and for families to live healthier\, longer and better lives together. \nTake part in the challenge and stand to win Decathlon e-vouchers (worth S$50 each) in the monthly lucky draw\, with three 13″ MacBook Air laptops and 10 Fitbit Sense smartwatches up for grabs in the grand lucky draw at the end of the Challenge! \n \nAbout the Challenge\nThe “NParks – AIA Explore a Route Challenge” will commence on 20 May 2022 in conjunction with the release of the NEAR app and will run till 20 July 2022. It is open to all to participate. Participants must play the in-app game Tic Tac Toe Board on the NEAR app which requires them to physically complete various trails ranging from 5 km to 15 km per trail. They will have a chance to win rewards at the end of each month within the challenge period or in the Grand Lucky Draw at the end of the challenge. There are nine starting points across eight proposed trails including the Coast-to-Coast (Central) Trail and various Park Connector Loops. AIA Singapore has contributed close to S$14\,000 worth of prizes\, which include shopping vouchers and a laptop\, towards the challenge. \nThe challenge encourages users to experience the newly added NParks-curated trails and try out the new “Phyll My Trail” feature\, which allows users to customise their own recreational trails in the revamped NEAR app. It empowers users to design routes to suit their interests and discover unique biodiversity and interesting features along the trail. In doing so\, it seeks to improve their physical and mental well-being through the positive effects of nature. \nThe NEAR Application\nSince its initial launch in 2019\, the C2C mobile application has been well received with close to 100\,000 downloads. It features interactive AR elements such as 3D-animated characters. These characters provide interesting information about native flora and fauna\, and surrounding points of interest that users will encounter along our park trails and park connectors. The revamped app now allows users to curate their own trails and share the mapped trails with their in-app friends or on social media for them to experience and enjoy. This will encourage the community to exchange experiences with others and explore a wider variety of trails. In doing so\, Singaporeans will get to appreciate nature more while forging closer bonds. This is in line with our efforts to make Singapore into a City in Nature– a key pillar in the Singapore Green Plan\, which is a national movement to advance sustainable development – to create a green\, liveable and sustainable home for all Singaporeans. \n  \nMore information about the NEAR app and challenge can be found here. \n\nImages: National Parks Board
