SUMMARY:Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Stages First Showcase Of Local Street Buskers!
DESCRIPTION:On 18 October 2024 at 8.00pm\, the Concourse at Singapore Chinese Culture Centre (SCCC) will be transformed into a vibrant showcase of Singapore’s best street talents when SCCC present its first ever TGIF Music Station (Buskers Edition). \nLaunched in 2018\, TGIF Music Station is a free monthly programme which takes place on a Friday night and seeks to showcase both emerging and established local talents in the Mandopop scene. Through TGIF Music Station\, SCCC hopes to promote greater public awareness and appreciation of local talents\, enliven the Central Business District\, and instill pride in Singaporean arts and culture. \nSince its launch\, SCCC has organised a total of 152 sessions and featured a total of 496 local artistes. These sessions have attracted a total of 53\,615 participants and 6 million online views during live streams on SCCC’s social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok as of August 2024. \nFor its October 2024 TGIF Music Station\, SCCC will be featuring a total of 10 local buskers. These buskers range from young talents such as Lyla Ng (age 11) to senior groups such as Silver Hype comprising Gillian Goh (age 69) and Davidson Teo (age 65) as well as popular buskers who have released singles and EPs as WHYLUCAS and Jeff Ng. \nAccording to Gillian Goh of Silver Hype: “We are grateful to SCCC for the opportunity to perform to a new audience. Through busking on the streets\, we hope to set a positive example of how age should not stop you from doing what you love and to inspire more youths to pursue their dreams\, especially in music. If we can do it\, you can do it!” \nLyla Ng\, added: “I’m excited to perform on TGIF Music Station on 18 October as this is my first time performing at SCCC and I will also be sharing the stage with many of my fellow buskers! Learning and performing Mandarin songs in public has not only allowed me to better appreciate Chinese culture and language but has also improved my academic results! I hope to meet more friends and fans at TGIF Music Station!” \nSCCC Chief Executive Officer Alvin Tan said: “Through SCCC’s TGIF Music Station (Buskers Edition)\, we hope to support our local busking community by providing them with a platform to showcase their talents and interact with their fans\, and help them reach a wider audience both physically and digitally. Moving forward\, SCCC will organise a buskers edition every October and continue to feature at least one busker for every upcoming TGIF Music Station to provide more sustained support for the busking community.” \n\nImage: Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre

SUMMARY:Singapore Art Museum presents the homecoming of Seeing Forest
DESCRIPTION:Step into Seeing Forest\, presented for the first time in Singapore at Singapore Art Museum (SAM) at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. Returning from Venice\, this exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Robert Zhao Renhui invites visitors to immerse themselves in the multifaceted life of Singapore’s secondary forests—overlooked forests regrown from deforested land due to human intervention. Drawing on nearly a decade of research\, Zhao encourages audiences to look beyond our familiar cityscape and uncover the complex ecosystems that shape our natural environment. \nVisitors will be able to catch the full assemblage of videos and sculptural installations presented in Venice\, transforming SAM’s gallery space into an enveloping\, forested zone filled with sounds\, sights\, and stories that convey the richness of secondary forests. Through Zhao’s captivating scenes of these in-between spaces\, spot sambar deer that escaped from the local zoo in the 1970s\, Japanese sparrowhawks pausing for a drink and a wild boar giving birth in the forest next to the artist’s apartment. \nSeeing Forest was first presented at the Singapore Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (Biennale Arte 2024)\, widely recognised as the Olympics of the art world. From Venice to SAM’s home ground\, the exhibition invites audiences to discover a lesser-known side of Singapore\, and reflect on their place within these wild\, yet radically free environments. \n\n\n\nDates:\n15 January – 18 May 2025\n\n\nLocation:\nSingapore Art Museum at Tanjong Pagar Distripark\, Level 3\, Gallery 3 (Accessible via Lobby B)\n39 Keppel Road\, Tanjong Pagar Distripark\, Singapore 089065\n\n\nWebsite:\nhttps://www.singaporeartmuseum.sg/art-events/exhibitions/seeing-forest\n\n\nAdmission:\nGeneral Admission applies; Free for Singaporeans and PR. Free admission from 17–26 Jan 2025.\n\n\n\n\nImage: Singapore Art Museum

SUMMARY:City of Others: Asian Artists in Paris\, 1920s–1940s
DESCRIPTION:City of Others: Asian Artists in Paris\, 1920s–1940s is a groundbreaking exhibition that presents the experiences of Asian artists in Paris during a time period that is critical in the story of modernism\, and modern art’s relationship to ‘the Other.’ \nMoving beyond the idea of Paris as an art world centre in this period\, City of Others aims to re-read the art history of the city from Asian perspectives. During this peak period of artistic migration to Paris\, there was a dynamic\, cross-cultural exchange of aesthetics and ideas. This will be the first time the Paris experiences of artists from different parts of Asia are presented extensively together\, resulting in new comparisons that offer an original and nuanced picture of Paris as a site for artistic exchange. This is in line with National Gallery Singapore’s interest in examining Southeast Asian perspectives and narratives in global art histories\, as the leading institution in Southeast Asian and Singaporean modern and\ncontemporary art. While National Gallery Singapore’s collection and long-term exhibitions focus on the specific modernities of our region\, City of Others also allows us to extend this regional perspective into a broader global history of modern art. \nPresenting different zones of the art world of Paris in the early 20th century\, City of Others explores how Asian artists lived\, worked and exhibited. The exhibition offers a nuanced exploration of Asian artists’ experiences of the time\, including: new research into the contribution of Asian artists and labourers to Art Déco; the presentation of Asian artists\nat major exhibitions and salons in Paris; and the impact of colonial networks and exhibition platforms on modern artists from Southeast Asia. It will illuminate the complex networks of migrant artists\, uncovering how these connections enabled artistic developments and career progression. By examining the reception of Asian art within national\, cultural\, and colonial contexts in Paris\, the show reveals how artists navigated the expectations of the European audience while simultaneously re-engaging with their own cultural identities. A particular focus will be on the realm of the decorative arts\, which served as an initial point of cultural exchange\, highlighting the collaborations between Asian artisans and French designers that mutually shaped aesthetic sensibilities and artistic practices during this dynamic period.\nThe exhibition will feature more than 200 artworks\, including paintings\, sculptures\, lacquerware\, and decorative art\, and a further 200 archives and historical images\, with many presented for the first time in Singapore. Audiences can look forward to works by major Asian artists like Foujita Tsuguharu\, Georgette Chen\, Le Pho\, Liu Kang\, Xu Beihong\nand Sanyu\, alongside lesser-known figures. \nA joint symposium by National Gallery Singapore and Musée Cernuschi will be held in Paris on 20 February 2025. It will feature a sharing of research by the two institutions\, the curatorial concerns related to Asian artists developing their practice in Paris\, and new research and conceptualisation generated by their respective exhibitions City of Others and\nTrois artistes vietnamiens en France : Lê Phô\, Mai-Thu et Vu Cao Dam (Pioneers of modern Vietnamese art in France). \nThis will be followed by an expanded symposium on Paris as a ‘City of Others’ on 16 and 17 August 2025 in Singapore. \nPrice: $25\nTickets: http://tickets.nationalgallery.sg/ \n\nImage: National Gallery Singapore

SUMMARY:Rediscovering Chinese Music: A Tribute to Singapore’s Chinese Orchestra Music Pioneers
DESCRIPTION:As part of SG60 celebrations\, Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) will present Rediscovering Chinese Music on 24 August 2025. First presented digitally in 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic\, this meaningful concert will be performed live this time to commemorate the passion\, resilience\, and artistry of our pioneers in the Chinese orchestral music scene in Singapore during the 1950s to the 1970s. \nDuring a period with few resources and limited access to scores\, these early musicians displayed the spirit of perseverance and dedication through transcribing music by ear\, learning from recordings and attempting their own arrangements. The concert seeks to honour this legacy by reviving the spirit and sounds of a generation that laid the foundation of Singapore’s Chinese orchestral music scene. \nThe concert will feature three generations of Chinese orchestra musicians performing on the same stage\, including members from the 1970s iteration of the independent ensemble\, Chang Chun Chinese Orchestra\, such as Tng Kin Seng and Choo Boon Chong\, both of whom have served as principal or associate principal players with Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra; current and former members of Singapore Chinese Orchestra; as well as a new generation of outstanding young musicians. This homecoming concert with a multi-generational line-up not only embodies professional excellence\, but also symbolises the continued passing down of Chinese orchestral music from veterans to the young. \nThe concert’s repertoire will include classic works which were widely performed and beloved in that era\, including ensemble pieces\, instrumental solos and vocal performances. Audiences can look forward to nostalgic favourites such as Joyous Celebration\, Song of Joy\, Spring Water Flowing and Scenery of Guilin. Each work has been meticulously arranged or transcribed by Phoon Yew Tien\, one of Singapore’s foremost Chinese music composers and scholars. \nConcert producer Mr Phoon Yew Tien said\, “We hope that this concert will allow more people to gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese orchestral music scene in this region during the 1950s to 1970s. To recreate the experience of the past more accurately\, this concert not only strives for authenticity in performance but also deliberately emulates the programming style of Chinese orchestral concerts during that era.” \nTickets are available on SISTIC at S$20 (including GST and booking fee) from 21 July 2025 (10.00am) to 24 August 2025 (6.00pm)\, with early bird discount of 30% from 21 July 2025 (10.00am) to 28 July 2025 (11.59pm). \nFrom 29 July 2025 to 24 August 2025 (6.00pm)\, PAssion Card\, SAFRA\, HomeTeamNS\, and merewards members can also enjoy a 20% discount. SUMMARY:Healing Heritage: A Journey Through the Evolution of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Singapore
DESCRIPTION:Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) presents Healing Heritage\, an exhibition that traces the story of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Singapore from its roots in the 19th century to its role in daily life today.  \nHeld from 1 October 2025 to 22 February 2026 at SCCC’s Creative Box (Level 6)\, the exhibition invites visitors to explore how TCM has evolved over the years in Singapore\, blending tradition with innovation and staying relevant in today’s modern lifestyles. \nSupported by Singapore Chinese Physicians’ Association and Singapore Chung Hwa Medical Institution\, Healing Heritage highlights milestones in TCM’s development in Singapore\, its community impact\, and adaptations to modern society. Through interpretive displays\, historical artefacts\, interactive experiences\, and stories of medical organisations and brands\, visitors can discover how TCM has evolved while remaining true in its cultural heritage as a living tradition in Singapore. \nThe exhibition is organised into five zones\, each designed for visitors to uncover different aspects of TCM and its rich history: \nTracing the Healing Journey – Follow TCM’s development in Singapore\, from early 19th century medical halls to its recognition in today’s healthcare system. Milestones include the founding of Thong Chai Medical Institution in 1867 and the recent inclusion of acupuncture under MediSave. \nEncountering the Neighbourhood Healer – Step into a recreated medical hall with classic wooden cabinets and drawers of herbs. Learn how family-run businesses adapted to changing times\, and try an interactive herb-matching game to learn about remedies hands-on. \nBuilding Benevolence through Community – Discover the role of charitable institutions and professional organisations in supporting healthcare during epidemics and raising standards through education and research. Exhibits include traditional acupuncture needles and early journals like Medical Monthly (Yiyao Yuekan). \nTransforming Tradition through Innovation – See how TCM evolves with modern life\, from halal-certified remedies\, digital diagnostic tools and even vending machines. A canine acupuncture model in this zone shows how TCM can be adapted and applied in veterinary care. \nSustaining a Living Heritage – Experience how TCM continues to be part of everyday life\, from medicinal cuisine and herbal products to social media outreach by young TCM physicians such as THE TCM FOLKS. A conversation kiosk further invites visitors to reflect on their own encounters with TCM. \nAccording to Alvin Tan\, CEO of SCCC: “With Healing Heritage\, we hope to focus on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as a system of medicine and as a form of intangible cultural heritage\, and to showcase TCM’s contributions to the Chinese community and to society. We also hope to highlight TCM’s impact and use beyond the Chinese community\, and to raise public awareness of how TCM has endured\, evolved and become part of Singaporeans’ everyday life.” \nFor more details on Healing Heritage please click here. \n\nImages: Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre

SUMMARY:Brainstorm
DESCRIPTION:Localised from the findings of leading neuroscientist Professor Sarah‑Jayne Blakemore who describes the adolescent brain as being “still under construction\,” particularly in regions responsible for decision‑making and social understanding\, Brainstorm is a unique theatrical investigation into how teenagers’ brains work\, and why they behave the way they do. From 16 to 26 October\, Gateway Arts will present Brainstorm at Gateway Theatre’s Black Box. This groundbreaking new production inspired by real-life experiences of Singaporean teenagers\, offers audiences a raw\, relatable look at the chaos\, humour\, and heartaches of growing up in today’s world — and it’s not just for youth\, it is also suitable for parents\, educators\, and adults who just want to enjoy and reminisce about our past fun times and angst. \nEach performance will be followed by a post-show discussion led by TOUCH Community Services\, to strengthen parent-teen communication through open conversation and shared reflections. \n \nThe Storyline: Inside the Storm of Teenage Minds\nInside every adolescent brain\, 86 billion neurons collide\, producing the intense changes that shape identity\, emotion\, and behaviour. From academic pressure and family dynamics to social media and screen-time addiction\, Brainstorm explores the modern adolescent experience\, giving audiences a chance to step into the minds of multi-racial youth in Singapore\, with varying context to their challenges. \nAn extension workshop with local teenagers helped shape Brainstorm\, creating a script rooted in real experiences in Singapore. As its reason for being\, Brainstorm aims to encourage its teenage viewers to realise that it is alright to feel all the complex feelings that they’re feeling. \nTo bring these experiences to life on stage\, the production will incorporate animated multimedia and live-streamed actor performances designed by Multimedia Designer\, Genevieve Peck. Brainstorm also injects a touch of humour\, with the characters even stepping into the roles of their nagging parents in a funny\, self-reflective scene. \nWhy watch Brainstorm?\n\nOpening Conversations that Matter – each performance is followed by a guided discussion by TOUCH Community Services\, for audiences to share reflections and access vital resources.\nTheatre as a Bridge to Understanding  – a tool for empathy\, closing the gap between young people and adults in their lives.\nReflecting Youth\, Inspiring Change – the play challenges assumptions about adolescence and reflects the realities of today’s youth\, while inspiring action\, sparking personal reflections\, prompting meaningful dialogue and encouraging communities to stand with young people.\n\nFor the latest updates\, visit https://gatewayarts.sg/portofolio/brainstorm \nDetails on the Performances\nDates & Time:\n17 Oct\, 8pm\n18 Oct\, 3pm and 8pm\n24 Oct\, 8pm\n25 Oct\, 3pm (SOLD OUT) and 8pm \nTicket Price: S$45 (excluding SISTIC booking fee)* \nVenue: Black Box\, Gateway Theatre \n*Do note that you can use your SG Culture Credits for this performance. \nTo purchase\, please go to http://www.sistic.com.sg/events/brain1025 \n\nImages: Gateway Arts

SUMMARY:Battle Scores – Where Wuxia Meets Music
DESCRIPTION:This October\, Ding Yi Music Company\, in collaboration with the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC)\, unveils Battle Scores — an action-packed concert that transforms the stage into a world where Chinese chamber music and wuxia collide. \nAudiences will be transported into a fantastical jianghu universe where five iconic Chinese instruments — the huqin (Chin Yen Choong)\, dizi\, guzheng (Yvonne Tay)\, percussion (Low Yik Hang)\, and suona (Jacky Ng) — embody the five great martial arts sects: Shaolin\, Wudang\, Emei\, Kunlun\, and Huashan. Through electrifying clashes of timbre and dramatic musical duels\, the instruments become avatars in a sweeping saga of ambition\, rivalry\, and reflection. \nFor the first time\, Ding Yi weaves shadow puppetry into its performance\, brought to life by actors Gordon Choy and Vanessa Toh\, who animate the rivalries and alliances of the martial arts world. Paired with wushu-inspired stage movements and the vitality of live Chinese chamber music\, Battle Scores boldly unites traditional art forms and cultures rarely experienced together\, creating a groundbreaking production that is both visually and musically arresting. \nHelmed by acclaimed theatremaker Chong Tze Chien\, Festival Director of the Singapore International Festival of Arts and known for his visually striking and emotionally-charged works\, the concert extends his creative partnership with Ding Yi following earlier collaborations such as The Zodiac Race (part of Esplanade’s Feed Your Imagination series). A full-length original composition by Taiwanese composer Hannah Hsieh anchors the work\, written specially to capture the energy\, tension\, and lyricism of this martial-arts-inspired musical realm. \n \n“By merging Chinese chamber music with wuxia\, we’re drawing from the very essence of Chinese culture — celebrating and reimagining it for today’s audiences\,” said Wong De Li\, Dedric\, Resident Conductor of Ding Yi Music Company. “Each instrument becomes a martial art\, each musical phrase a clash or alliance\, reminding us that in any battle\, victory or defeat matters less than the human cost of conflict. Working with director Chong Tze Chien and composer Hannah Hsieh\, we’ve created something both theatrical and deeply musical — a vivid celebration of the enduring spirit of Chinese culture.” \nBattle Scores will be held on 18 October 2025 (Saturday)\, 3.30pm and 7.30pm at SCCC Auditorium\, Level 9. Tickets are available for public sales at $35 (excluding booking fees) on SISTIC here and is eligible for purchase using SG Culture Pass credits. SAFRA\, HomeTeamNS and merewards members enjoy a 20% discount. Terms and conditions apply. \n\nImages: Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre
