SUMMARY:Tradition in Motion: Singapore’s Lion Dance Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) is proud to present Tradition in Motion: Singapore’s Lion Dance Heritage\, a special exhibition for the upcoming Chinese New Year that showcases the rich history\, evolving customs\, and contemporary expressions of lion dance in Singapore.  \nFeaturing over 50 artefacts\, photographs\, posters and figurines\, the exhibition highlights the enduring significance of lion dance in Singapore\, its diversity\, innovations\, and achievements of local lion dance troupes. The exhibition is anchored by a display of eight lion heads\, representing the variety of lion dance styles practised in Singapore including the familiar southern lion dance\, and the less common Hainan Lion and the Fujian Green Lion. \nPresented through three main thematic zones\, the exhibition first explores the history\, traditions\, and customs of lion dance in Singapore. The exhibition also reveals the intricate craft of lion head making\, featuring a handcrafted lion head made by Singapore’s last lion head craftsman\, Henry Ng\, shown in its first and final stages of production.  \nThe second zone explores Singapore’s lion dance culture as it continues to thrive in Singapore today. In this zone\, visitors can view the Genting World Lion Dance Trophies won by Yiwei Athletic Association in 2023 and 2025\, and learn how our local troupes continue to embrace diversity by opening its doors to members of all ages and ethnicities\, and adapting lion dance routines for senior performers. \nThe final zone showcases pop-culture representations of lion dance that highlight contemporary culture’s ongoing fascination with lion dance. From vintage posters of films such as Once Upon a Time in China III to limited-edition collectibles like the Uniplay Fortune (Mer)lion Dance figurine\, the exhibition showcases lion dance as an enduring source of inspiration for cultural offerings. \nSCCC Chief Executive Officer\, Mr Alvin Tan\, said\, “Through the exhibition\, we hope that visitors can learn more about lion dance\, including its early roots\, the unique traits of lion dance in Singapore\, how it continues to be manifested through popular culture\, and more. We also hope that visitors will not only feel proud of the achievements of our local lion dance troupes\, but be inspired by their resilience and ongoing efforts to ensure that lion dance becomes not only an enduring artform but a cultural heritage that Singaporeans can be proud of.” \nVisit Tradition in Motion: Singapore’s Lion Dance Heritage to learn how the traditional art form of lion dance continues to innovate\, and how it remains a vibrant symbol of culture\, resilience\, and community spirit. The exhibition will be on display at SCCC Concourse Level 1\, 9am to 10pm\, from 11 December 2025 to 30 April 2026. Admission is free. \n\nImage: Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre

SUMMARY:Scaredy Kat Presents
DESCRIPTION:A Youth Theatre Story About Anxiety\, Courage and Creativity\nGateway Arts’ latest youth theatre production Scaredy Kat Presents arrives in Singapore this May with a multimedia-driven performance that explores how young people experience fear\, friendship and self-doubt. Directed by award-winning theatre-maker Yvan Karlsson and written by playwright Janine Sobeck Knighton\, the production blends live performance with stop-motion animation and puppetry to bring the emotional world of its young protagonist to life. \nThe story follows Kathryn\, a girl who has lived with anxiety since childhood. She finds comfort in creating stop-motion films inside her room\, building a miniature world where she can safely express emotions she struggles to articulate in real life. When a new classmate enters her carefully controlled space\, Kathryn must decide whether she is ready to step beyond fear and embrace change. \nMultimedia Storytelling Designed for Young Audiences\nThis production marks Gateway Arts’ first theatre project to integrate live visual feeds and stop-motion filmmaking into its storytelling. A specially created stop-motion sequence featuring handcrafted puppets offers insight into Kathryn’s inner emotional landscape\, reflecting themes of insecurity\, loneliness and courage. \nAlongside the animated elements\, larger-scale puppetry appears within the live performance itself\, creating a layered theatrical experience that communicates feelings visually rather than relying purely on dialogue. \nThe result is a performance designed to resonate with young audiences navigating uncertainty while also helping parents and educators better understand how children process anxiety and self-confidence. \n \nSupporting Conversations About Mental Wellness\nEach performance will be followed by a facilitated post-show discussion led by TOUCH Counselling & Psychological Services. These sessions provide audiences with opportunities to reflect on themes such as social anxiety\, peer pressure and emotional resilience\, while offering practical perspectives from mental health professionals. \nThrough storytelling and guided reflection\, Scaredy Kat Presents aims to create a shared space for families\, educators and young people to talk more openly about emotional wellbeing. \nWho Should Watch This Performance\nRecommended primarily for audiences aged 10 to 14\, the production is also suitable for parents\, educators and anyone interested in stories about growing up\, friendship and overcoming fear. The show runs for approximately 75 minutes with no intermission. \nEvent Details\nPerformance Dates (Public Shows)23 May 2026 – 3:00pm\, 7:30pm24 May 2026 – 3:00pm29 May 2026 – 7:30pm30 May 2026 – 3:00pm\, 7:30pm31 May 2026 – 3:00pm \nSchool Shows21\, 22\, 25\, 26 and 28 May 2026 \nVenueGateway Theatre Black Box3615 Jalan Bukit MerahSingapore 159461 \nTicket PricesEarly Bird: S$36 (excluding booking fees)Standard: S$45 (excluding booking fees; eligible for SG Culture Pass) \nRegistration Linkhttps://gatewayarts.sg/portfolio/scaredy-kat-presents \n\nImages: Scaredy Kat
